Coinbase has introduced wrapped versions of altcoins, XRP and Dogecoin 
$0.106534, namely cbXRP and cbDOGE, to its DeFi-focused Layer-2 network, Base. These assets are backed by reserves held at a 1:1 ratio of XRP and DOGE. On the first day, 2.3 million cbXRP (equivalent to $5 million) and 10.4 million cbDOGE (equivalent to $1.9 million) were issued. Wrapped coins bridge the assets from the XRP Ledger and Dogecoin Blockchain to the Ethereum 
$2,262 ecosystem, facilitating low-fee transitions to DeFi applications on Base. Coinbase also announced ongoing efforts to add wrapped versions of Litecoin (cbLTC) and Cardano 
$0.246513 (cbADA) to Base, with announcements expected soon.
What Awaits Base Users with cbXRP and cbDOGE?
cbXRP and cbDOGE are designed as ERC-20 tokens pegged 1:1 to original balances held in Coinbase custody wallets. This setup enables users to utilize their XRP and Dogecoin balances within Base-based protocols without withdrawing from the main network. The wrapped format is secured via blockchain proof of reserves, ensuring transparency. Coinbase directly manages the minting and burning of these coins.
The scalability advantage allows both altcoins to swiftly integrate into popular DeFi strategies such as liquidity mining, lending, and trading on decentralized exchanges. The XRP and Dogecoin communities benefit from low transaction fees, granting wider access to Ethereum-based applications, thus enhancing liquidity depth within the Base network.
Strengthening the Base Ecosystem
Base is an open and permissionless Layer-2 solution leveraging Optimism technology, promising higher transactions per second and notably reduced fees. Last year’s introduction of cbBTC by Coinbase achieved a market value of $4.7 billion. The new wrapped assets are expected to experience similar growth. With this move, Coinbase aims to make the Base network more appealing compared to alternative Layer-2 networks.
The imminent launch of cbLTC and cbADA will widen the array of wrapped assets on Base, promoting multichain liquidity. Experts believe this model, backed by Coinbase’s custodial assurances, will accelerate the seamless integration of a broader cryptocurrency portfolio into the Ethereum ecosystem.
