Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong revealed that the company is developing payment infrastructure tailored for artificial intelligence, designed to allow AI models to manage money autonomously within a secure environment. This new service, named Coinbase for Agents, enables AI systems to hold and control their own sub-accounts, mirroring the features of a conventional bank account for human users, but strictly reserved for software entities.

New banking experience for AI models

The announcement came in response to a post by David Heinemeier Hansson, known as the creator of Ruby on Rails, who sought an “agentic bank” capable of granting a machine spending permissions. Armstrong replied on X, stating that Coinbase is actively building the financial account for AI, confirming that the infrastructure is already in development.

AI models such as Claude and ChatGPT can now connect to Coinbase using a local Model-Compute-Provider (MCP) server. Rather than obtaining open access to an owner’s assets, the AI is given a strictly segregated sub-account. This setup ensures that all transactions remain under predefined constraints and provides transparency to human overseers.

Users can establish daily transaction limits and individual caps for each AI agent. Once configured, the AI operates independently within these parameters, undertaking spending and other financial actions on behalf of its human counterpart. Armstrong noted that the platform is gradually increasing the potential autonomy AI models enjoy as the system matures.

Mini dictionary: MCP server, or Model-Compute-Provider server, is an interface that facilitates secure data exchange and computational tasks between AI models and external systems like Coinbase, acting as a bridge for integrating advanced AI agents in financial environments.

Internal AI restructuring and pilot programs

This new direction follows a significant operational overhaul at Coinbase. Early in 2026, Armstrong reduced the workforce by roughly 14%, removing approximately 700 roles, and introduced compact AI-centric teams. In this internal model, a single specialist oversees several AI agents driving business operations.

Coinbase has since extended these AI initiatives beyond internal use, opening advanced agent functionalities to the wider public. In August, AI-driven agents began trading derivatives and S&P 500 stocks, and ran real-world pilots like booking travel through AWS AgentCore and paying for hotels with USDC stablecoins on Coinbase’s Base network.

Innovative payment solutions and AI vision

One major technical barrier for fully autonomous AI money management has been payments. Traditional subscription-based payment systems are unsuitable for agentic AI, which acts based on constantly changing demands and usage.

To solve this, Coinbase implemented the x402 protocol, which enables AIs to make instant, pay-per-request payments directly from their USDC holdings. This solution bypasses the need for recurring billing or API keys and is currently executed through Agentic Wallets, with future plans for direct integration into the Coinbase for Agents framework.

Mini dictionary: x402 protocol, developed for automated agent payments, allows for direct microtransactions by AI, operating without traditional API key management, and streamlining the process of pay-as-you-go access to services.

Armstrong has stated that the company aims to build infrastructure for a future where autonomous agents outnumber human users in conducting transactions. The recent appointment of Anthony Armstrong to Coinbase’s board in September solidified leadership for this AI-driven growth strategy.

Coinbase for Agents allows users to grant AI models secure, autonomous financial control under strict parameters, marking a significant advance in agentic banking infrastructure.
