Deutsche Bank, the largest banking institution in Germany, will soon introduce a crypto custody service aimed at institutional and corporate clients. The move reflects the bank’s expanding focus on digital assets, with the initial rollout expected within the coming weeks.
New custody service targeting institutions
The custody offering will start in Germany and is specifically designed for corporate entities and institutional investors rather than individual holders. The bank plans to manage crypto wallets and private keys on behalf of clients, eliminating the need for these entities to establish their own digital asset custody infrastructure.
Gerald Podobnik, co-head of the corporate banking division at Deutsche Bank, shared details of the new initiative during the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank in Bangkok.
Initial support will focus on major cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH). The bank also outlined plans to offer custody services for select stablecoins, including USDC and EURC, when the service launches.
Deutsche Bank will manage wallets and private keys for institutional clients, offering secure storage for digital assets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. The service does not extend to retail investors at this stage.
Expansion plans in Asia and new digital services
After its German rollout, Deutsche Bank aims to expand crypto custody operations to key financial centers across Asia by 2027. In addition, the bank is working on introducing fiat-to-stablecoin conversion services to allow clients to move seamlessly between traditional currencies and digital tokens. These offerings will follow the initial custody launch.
| Service | Assets Supported | Target Clients | Launch Region | Future Regions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crypto custody | BTC, ETH, USDC, EURC | Institutions, Corporates | Germany | Asia (by 2027) |
| Fiat-stablecoin conversion | Major fiat, selected stablecoins | Institutions, Corporates | Germany (later) | Asia (by 2027) |
The bank is actively developing further blockchain-based offerings. Plans include helping clients issue tokenized deposits and enabling the issuance of digital bonds using blockchain technology. Tokenized deposits will allow traditional bank deposits to be represented on a blockchain, facilitating rapid movement and settlement of funds within financial networks.
Deutsche Bank intends to support the creation and management of debt securities directly on the blockchain, which could make the process of issuing and settling bonds more efficient for corporates.
Mini dictionary: Tokenized deposit, a digital representation of a bank deposit issued and tracked on a blockchain, allowing banks and clients to use blockchain technology for instant settlement and movement of funds while retaining the traditional protections of regulated deposits.
Podobnik emphasized that blockchain-based financial products will serve as a complement rather than a replacement for existing banking infrastructure. He described these digital services as an extension of Deutsche Bank’s long-term corporate banking strategy.
Growth ambitions and strategic outlook
The crypto custody offering fits into Deutsche Bank’s broader corporate banking strategy, aimed at increasing revenue by 8% annually through 2028. The bank’s management expects that integrating digital assets and blockchain-based solutions will appeal to a growing segment of institutional clients interested in adopting new technologies.
Deutsche Bank’s entry into crypto custody marks another sign that major financial institutions are moving to provide digital asset services alongside their traditional banking offerings, underscoring the sector’s accelerating mainstream adoption.
