Discord, a major community platform serving millions of users and thousands of crypto-related groups, has announced that it will allow certain public server conversations to appear in web search results and on new web pages. This update is targeted at its 63,000 Discoverable Servers and is intended to help users more easily find helpful information without first joining a community.

Rollout schedule and features

Discord will implement its new policy in two phases. Beginning November 16, every Discoverable Server will automatically receive a public Server Web Page. These pages will start displaying AI-generated summaries of discussions that occur from that point onward. By mid-December, some newly posted messages in public channels may also become accessible via these web pages and show up directly in search engine results.

Discoverable Servers must maintain at least 1,000 members and meet several age, activity, and safety requirements. Private communities, non-public channels, and direct messages are excluded from the change. Discord aims to make it easier for users to obtain accurate, community-generated answers without additional barriers.

To maintain some privacy safeguards, Discord says that usernames and avatars will remain hidden in published content. Channels included in the web search and summaries will display an indicator icon, and users will receive a warning before they share any post in participating channels.

Discord has outlined that only eligible public channels with default settings will be included in the new web presence, but server administrators can manually control visibility for both AI summaries and individual messages using a suite of Web Presence settings.

Mini dictionary: Discoverable Servers, on Discord, are large public servers that meet specific criteria for activity and safety, allowing them to appear in the platform’s official search and Explore features.

By default, both the summary and message switches remain on unless adjusted by the server admin. Discord also cautions that AI-generated summaries may not always be accurate. In the crypto sector, this could pose a risk of misleading new users if summaries fail to convey the original context.

Member privacy and opt-out restrictions

While Discord offers a privacy switch that prevents personal messages from appearing in web searches, the system has its limitations. This account-wide setting is switched off by default for users in the EU, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia, and South Korea, but is on in most other regions. Teen accounts cannot activate the privacy switch, limiting their control over visibility.

Importantly, even if a user enables this privacy control, AI-generated summaries can still include references to their posts. Only server admins have authority to exclude messages from summaries.

Messages previously eligible for public display are not automatically removed if a member opts out. Users who wish to erase their content from Discord pages must delete their own posts. However, search engines may retain cached copies of these messages even after deletion, heightening user concerns about lingering data exposure.

Some users fear that their messages, though stripped of personal identifiers, could still be viewed by unintended audiences well beyond the original community due to search engine caching and public listing.

Risks for crypto communities

Crypto-focused Discord groups have long been targets for scams and information leaks. In 2025, researchers aggregated more than 2 billion messages from over 3,000 public Discord servers for academic purposes using the platform’s API, raising concerns about the broader accessibility of community discussions.

Concerns grew after the 2024 exposure of “Spy Pet,” a data-scraping service selling access to Discord user messages. For as little as $5, buyers could view message histories from multiple servers, potentially putting users and projects at risk.

Mini dictionary: Spy Pet was a service that scraped and indexed public messages from Discord servers, selling user content to subscribers for research or malicious purposes.

The lending protocol Morpho recently limited its server to read-only access after scams continued to victimize its members. Merlin Egalite, a co-founder, stated that even with existing security features, scammers successfully impersonated support staff to prey on users.

Fraudsters have adopted various tactics, including distributing fake verification links, as discovered by cyber security company Check Point in connection with the Collab.Land platform. Chainalysis reported that $14 billion in scam-related transactions occurred in 2025, with losses related to impersonation seeing a sharp increase of over 1,400% from the previous year.

Benefits and possible downsides

Proponents argue the expanded search function will let users quickly locate problem-solving information and community support. However, risks persist as scammers may also exploit this greater transparency to identify and target vulnerable users. Even in the absence of visible usernames, messages might disclose sensitive details inadvertently.

So far, there are no public reports of actual harm stemming from the feature’s introduction. Still, the changes prompt server moderators to review the balance between openness and protection for their members.
