The Ethereum Foundation has announced the launch of zkAPI, a privacy-focused system developed together with the Open Anonymity Project, which enables users to pay for AI and other API services on Ethereum mainnet without revealing their billing identities.
How zkAPI works
According to Vittorio Rivabella, AI coordinator at the Ethereum Foundation’s dAI team, the system allows users to deposit funds into an Ethereum vault and utilize zero-knowledge proofs to verify available credit for API requests. This mechanism ensures that while payments are validated and processed, the identity of individual depositors remains undisclosed.
zkAPI issues short-lived API keys with defined spending limits, and these keys are then used by customers to access provider services. Prompts are submitted straight to the AI provider, while billing and payment settlements occur separately through the zkAPI protocol’s dedicated payment layer.
The project also introduced a local client and software development kit, enabling integration with developer tools. A browser-based AI chat implementation showcases how users can interact with AI models while maintaining payment privacy.
Background and technical details
This release brings to production a concept outlined in a February proposal by Ethereum Foundation researcher Davide Crapis and Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, which envisioned using zero-knowledge-based API usage credits. With its mainnet deployment, the model now offers real-world private, prepaid access to AI and other metered API services.
For users seeking privacy, the system provides a way to pay for services without linking payments to their identities. Nevertheless, zkAPI does not shield prompt contents or network metadata from providers, and it is still possible for users to be tracked across sessions through identifiers like IP addresses, timing, or specifics in their requests.
Expanding private transactions in crypto
The drive for privacy-centric payments aligns with broader trends in the Ethereum ecosystem to make DeFi, AI, and ancillary services more secure and confidential. As privacy remains a core concern for many blockchain developers and end-users, tools like zkAPI can provide options for maintaining sensitive information separate from on-chain identities or payment histories.
Technical innovations such as zero-knowledge proofs, crucial to zkAPI’s approach, are increasingly being adopted for a range of use cases involving verifiable, permissioned access across Ethereum’s protocols.
In the context of fast-moving markets and rapid user adoption cycles, technical monitoring and awareness of novel trends are vital. In the meme token market, an internet trend can transform into millions of dollars of interest within days. According to data shared by Fomo App, a trade involving “Niu Lai”—which turned an initial $99 investment into approximately $370,000, stands out as a striking example of this activity. In this market, tracking not only prices but also the timing and token choices of investors is crucial. Fomo App brings token discovery and trading together on a single platform, featuring social feeds, investor rankings, and trade notifications. In related developments, privacy and network security remain in focus as platforms like MetaMask recently withdrew from Ethereum validator duties following a security incident that was not publicly detailed.
