TransparentBusiness Inc., operating under the name Unicoin, has filed a lawsuit against Universal Navigation Inc., known as Uniswap Labs, in the Southern District of New York as of Tuesday. The legal action requests a judicial declaration that Unicoin’s use of the UNICOIN trademark does not infringe or dilute Uniswap’s asserted trademarks UNI, UNISWAP, and UNICHAIN.
Trademark Dispute Centers on UNI Brand
The complaint also asks the court to cancel Uniswap’s US trademark registration for UNI. TransparentBusiness states that its branding and activities do not violate Uniswap’s intellectual property rights, rejecting claims related to trademark similarity or reputation dilution.
According to the lawsuit, Uniswap’s legal team sent three demand letters to Unicoin on June 3, July 17, and August 14. These letters accused Unicoin of trademark infringement, dilution, cybersquatting, and unfair competition. Uniswap further demanded that Unicoin cease using the UNICOIN and other UNI-formative marks, transfer ownership of the unicoin.com and unicoin.org domains, and provide records of revenue and profits associated with the allegedly infringing activities. The correspondence also included a demand for reimbursement of Uniswap’s legal expenses.
The complaint seeks a court order declaring that Unicoin’s domains, unicoin.com and unicoin.org, do not violate the federal Anti-Cybersquatting Consumer Protection Act, challenging the basis of Uniswap’s demands related to domain ownership.
The ongoing dispute comes as TransparentBusiness prepares for the UNCN token’s public launch, which is scheduled for September 28 according to details published on Unicoin’s website.
Uniswap’s Market Position and Comment Request
As the case unfolds, Uniswap maintains a leading position in the decentralized exchange (DEX) market. Data from DeFiLlama currently ranks the Uniswap protocol as the largest DEX by 24-hour trading volume, reporting over $3.9 billion within a single day.
Requests for comment have been submitted to Uniswap concerning the lawsuit, but an official response remains outstanding at this time.
