The Ethereum Foundation has announced an ambitious roadmap, dubbed Strawmap, to future-proof its blockchain network against quantum computing threats by 2029. Spanning the next five years, the plan details a series of seven major upgrades designed to transition Ethereum’s core infrastructure to post-quantum cryptography, ensuring its continued security in the face of advancing technology.

Seven Hard Forks Targeting Quantum Resilience

Strawmap centers on seven scheduled hard forks, starting in 2026, which will overhaul the network’s consensus layer from the ground up. Each upgrade will incrementally introduce quantum-resistant cryptographic techniques and aims to reduce finality times for new blocks to under sixteen seconds. By implementing these protections, Ethereum seeks to safeguard its protocol from the risk of quantum computers, which could one day break current cryptographic defenses and compromise blockchain integrity.

The initial step—dubbed the Glamsterdam hard fork—is slated for the first half of 2026. Soon after, another key upgrade named Hegota is planned for later that year. Following these, further hard forks are expected at six-month intervals, marking a steady progression toward a quantum-secure blockchain.

As the steward of one of the most significant open-source blockchain ecosystems, the Ethereum Foundation guides a platform supported by thousands of developers worldwide. Ethereum maintains its position as the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, underpinning decentralized applications and smart contracts that power the expanding digital asset economy.

Overhauling Consensus and Cryptography

A major highlight of Strawmap is the implementation of Single Slot Finality—a new consensus model that will dramatically reduce the time it takes for transactions to be finalized on-chain. Currently, it takes up to fifteen minutes for a block to achieve full finality on the Ethereum network. With Strawmap, the goal is to bring this down to less than sixteen seconds, making it nearly impossible to reverse transactions or exploit blockchain reorganizations.

On the cryptography front, Ethereum plans to replace its existing elliptic curve algorithms with hash-based signature systems and STARK-powered solutions. These upgrades will make the network far more resistant to quantum attacks, as such signature schemes are designed to withstand the accelerated decryption capabilities of quantum computers. The transition also holds special importance for Layer-2 scaling solutions, which have recently faced technical setbacks during testnet interruptions, highlighting the urgency of these upgrades.

“Quantum computers will eventually break public-key cryptography, which underpins ownership, identity, and consensus across all digital systems,” the Ethereum Foundation’s quantum research team stated in a public announcement.

Beyond technical complexity, time pressure stands as one of the greatest challenges in this transition. Scientists warn that commercial quantum computers may become available within four to five years, putting the Ethereum upgrade timeline under intense scrutiny. Each phase of the seven-step plan must be executed as scheduled to avoid exposing the network to critical security vulnerabilities and potential attacks.

Ethereum’s move from research to implementation is exemplified by the current development proposals for the upcoming Glamsterdam hard fork. As the network prepares to roll out its renewed architecture, Ethereum aims to once again raise security standards across the digital asset industry, positioning itself at the forefront of blockchain resilience against next-generation threats.
