Rise in impersonation scams targeting EU crypto users

The introduction of the MiCA framework has created new opportunities for fraudsters who have begun posing as both regulatory authorities and legitimate companies. This trend was highlighted by The Financial Times, which reported a significant increase in deceptive activity as unlicensed crypto firms are required to halt or transfer their operations within the EU.

More than 1,700 unlicensed firms, including exchanges like Knaken, have either ceased their activities or redirected their users to platforms that obtained the MiCA license. Digital asset holders who found themselves on these unlicensed exchanges have been forced to migrate their funds, often exposing themselves to new threats as scammers attempt to intercept these transfers using various techniques.

Blockchain analytics companies have observed a notable acceleration in impersonation scams, with malicious actors employing fake websites, counterfeit documentation, and sophisticated social engineering methods to defraud unsuspecting users of their digital assets.

Regulator response and user protection measures

Regulators and consumer protection agencies have issued repeated warnings, urging users to verify the authenticity of any communication requesting asset transfers. They advise confirmation that a cryptocurrency service provider holds authorized status under the current framework prior to engaging in any transaction.

For example, French authorities declined to institute a stringent migration deadline for compliance, aiming to minimize disruption and limit the risk of hasty, unsafe asset transfers. In 2025, the European Supervisory Authorities emphasized that consumers should independently confirm whether a provider is fully authorized by MiCA regulations to avoid falling victim to fraudulent schemes.

In parallel, regulators have cautioned licensed crypto firms to refrain from exaggerating the scope of regulatory protections tied to their products. They noted that misleading promotional practices have the potential to sow confusion among investors about which services are genuinely protected by MiCA’s regulatory safeguards.

Impersonation scams, often involving fake regulatory notices and forged documents, remain one of the fastest-growing categories of fraud in the crypto sector, with attackers exploiting periods of regulatory transition to target inexperienced users.

Tools and best practices for staying ahead of threats

With risks rising during the MiCA transition, cryptocurrency investors are advised to remain vigilant and continually monitor markets. Leveraging innovative solutions may assist in mitigating threats. For instance, CryptoAppsy provides a streamlined interface that combines portfolio management with real-time prices and charts, enabling users to monitor their investments and market trends efficiently.

This all-in-one assistant allows investors to set up dynamic price alerts, filter news for specific coins, discover newly listed altcoins quickly, and track important macroeconomic indicators—including the latest decisions on Federal Reserve interest rates—without the burden of account creation. Such platforms offer practical tools to help users respond rapidly to changes in regulatory landscapes and prevent exposure to scams.
