Ongoing conflict and escalating security risks in the Middle East have led to an unprecedented shakeup for both global motorsport and the cryptocurrency industry. Formula 1 has canceled its high-profile races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia for 2026, while top digital asset conferences and several UAE-based business events are now postponed or abandoned.

F1’s Middle East Schedule Severely Disrupted

Formula 1, the world’s premier international motorsport championship, confirmed the removal of the Bahrain Grand Prix (originally slated for April 12, 2026) and the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix (planned for April 19, 2026) from its upcoming calendar. The organization cited travel complications, restricted airspace, and heightened military activity as core factors making safe event delivery unattainable.

Recent weeks saw military escalation with Iranian missile and drone strikes reaching Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, following coordinated U.S. and Israeli operations against Iran at the end of February. Intense security concerns have persisted, with no clear end to the regional conflict recognized as of mid-March 2026.

F1 president Stefano Domenicali drew attention to the complexity of the decision, indicating, “While this was a difficult decision to take, it is unfortunately the right one at this stage considering the current situation in the Middle East.”

Discussions about moving the canceled races to other venues such as Italy’s Imola or Portugal’s Portimão did not progress, mainly because of tight logistical timelines. The stripped-down 2026 season calendar will now feature 22 races, leaving teams with a notable five-week gap between stops in Japan and Miami.

Financial Impact and Crypto Sponsorship Fallout

Both Bahrain and Saudi Arabia are leading contributors to F1’s financial ecosystem, commanding hosting fees that together reach an estimated $115 million each year. Analysis from Guggenheim Partners suggests that the loss of these two races could cost Formula 1 approximately $200 million in revenue and cut EBITDA by $80 million.

Some of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges are directly impacted as major F1 sponsors. OKX, valued at $25 billion and primary partner to McLaren since 2022, stands alongside Crypto.com, which entered a long-term global partnership with F1 due to run through 2030. Bybit, the main sponsor of Red Bull Racing, previously agreed to deals estimated at up to $150 million. These partnerships, formed to engage growing audiences in the Gulf and worldwide, now face uncertainty due to the race cancellations and the collapse of regional marketing opportunities.

Other exchanges such as Kraken, Coinbase, and Binance also maintain sponsorships with teams or events, but company representatives from OKX and Crypto.com did not comment publicly on the developing situation. The visibility lost in the Gulf region is expected to hinder crypto outreach in one of its most promising markets.

Dubai’s Crypto Conference Calendar Upended

Disruption has reached the heart of the region’s tech and blockchain ecosystem. TOKEN2049 Dubai, one of the globe’s largest digital asset summits attracting over 15,000 participants, has pushed its next event to April 21–22, 2027. Organizers attributed the move to increased safety concerns and the unpredictability of the situation.

TON Gateway Dubai, dedicated to the Open Network blockchain, has been called off entirely, with all participants refunded. Other high-profile conferences such as Middle East Energy Dubai, Affiliate World Global, and the Dubai International Boat Show have either been postponed to late 2027 or delayed indefinitely.

For the time being, upcoming motorsport events like the Qatar Grand Prix and Abu Dhabi Grand Prix remain on the Formula 1 calendar. Organizers stated they are continuing to monitor regional stability as developments unfold.
