Hyundai, one of South Korea’s largest car manufacturers, has publicly acknowledged the potential of Avalanche (AVAX) for streamlining cross-border settlements. The company’s payment division, Hyundai Card, recently completed a proof-of-concept transaction involving a $20,000 USDT transfer from the United States to Mexico, with settlement completed in approximately seven minutes.
Hyundai evaluates blockchain versus traditional settlement
The test sharply contrasts with the standard three to four hour timeframe typically required for international bank transfers. Hyundai Card has begun to explore whether such rapid settlement can be maintained at much larger transaction volumes across the group’s operations. If scalable, Hyundai Card believes that using Avalanche’s blockchain could significantly enhance the payment infrastructure and provide notable liquidity advantages for AVAX.
Heejung Nam, Head of Payments and Business Development at Hyundai Card, emphasized the importance of demonstrating operational viability at scale. Nam stated that the wider economic benefits will only materialize if the payment operating model can handle high volumes efficiently.
Heejung Nam explained that valid conclusions about the platform’s economic model depend on its ability to operate at group scale, suggesting that successful scaling could lead to cost-effective settlements and considerable liquidity improvements.
Despite the optimistic results, Hyundai Card highlighted the distinction between a simulated blockchain transaction and a full intercompany settlement. The pilot, according to participants, is only the beginning of investigating potential blockchain-accelerated corporate fund flows at the group level.
Stablecoins and corporate treasury transformation
The initiative involved a partnership between Hyundai Card, Hyundai Motor, Tether—the issuer of USDT stablecoin—blockchain platform Avalanche, and Axiom, a blockchain payment infrastructure provider. Instead of transferring Avalanche’s native tokens, the pilot focused on stablecoins, specifically USDT, as a way to facilitate rapid and secure transfers across borders.
This project is intended to improve operational efficiency for Hyundai’s corporate treasury management. Faster settlement means less capital remains locked in transit, which could streamline the group’s global working capital and cash flow. If the integration expands, Hyundai Card expects reduced compliance, custody, and conversion costs, provided high transaction volumes are achieved.
Nam noted that achieving economies of scale is essential for these benefits to truly impact Hyundai’s financial structure. In this context, the ability to process settlements around the clock allows for real-time cash netting, minimizing delays from traditional banking hours or monthly reconciliation cycles.
Using Avalanche’s network to settle balances with dollar-based stablecoins could help Hyundai avoid the challenges of traditional banking, such as cut-off windows or stranded cash. This efficiency is especially valuable for managing international payments and relationships with global business partners.
Mini dictionary: Axiom is a blockchain payments infrastructure company specializing in facilitating stablecoin-based transactions and interoperability between different networks, particularly in the context of corporate and institutional finance.
| Transfer Method | Settlement Time | Transfer Asset |
|---|---|---|
| Avalanche (pilot) | 7 minutes | USDT (Tether stablecoin) |
| Traditional Bank | 3–4 hours | Fiat currency |
While no immediate plans were announced for consumer payment products, the Hyundai-Avalanche collaboration could mark a significant shift in global corporate payment strategies if these pilot projects develop into scalable solutions.
Hyundai Card’s pilot demonstrated faster, lower-cost international transfers, but the company remains focused on large-scale validation before a broader rollout.
