Kenya has rolled out a blockchain-based verification system for academic credentials through the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), placing over 30 million records on the Avalanche network. The initiative aims to tackle the widespread issue of forged certificates in the country and to enhance the ease and reliability of verifying qualifications.
Blockchain-powered verification to address certificate fraud
KNEC, in collaboration with Avalanche, introduced the new system on Monday, targeting the thousands of fake academic certificates reported every year. The verification platform allows employers, academic institutions, and other organizations to confirm the authenticity of educational records using Avalanche’s blockchain technology.
By putting credentials onchain, the new system dramatically raises the difficulty of tampering with academic records. The public launch provides a robust measure against fraud, though KNEC and Avalanche have not specified the extent to which students, employers, or educational institutions have already adopted the platform.
Avalanche described the development as KNEC “bringing tamper-proof e-certification to Kenya on Avalanche,” showcasing the shift toward secure and transparent verification of qualifications in the public sector.
Significance for Avalanche and potential market impact
For Avalanche, this deployment represents one of the largest public-sector projects on its blockchain to date. While Avalanche is best known for its role in decentralized finance and digital asset transactions, the Kenyan project signals a growing move into government record management.
Despite the scale of the initiative, neither KNEC nor Avalanche have indicated if the project is expected to drive direct demand for Avalanche’s native token, AVAX. CoinMarketCap data shows that AVAX declined 1.1% on Monday and is currently trading nearly 69% below its price from a year earlier.
Government integrations like Kenya’s may broaden the real-world use cases for Avalanche’s blockchain infrastructure, allowing the technology to demonstrate value far beyond its original finance and asset-tokenization origins.
