10,000 complaints filed over crypto transfer restrictions

Stand With Crypto, an advocacy group supporting the cryptocurrency sector, reported that 9,803 individuals filed a total of 10,092 complaints with banks in the United Kingdom regarding limits on transferring funds to crypto exchanges. The data, covering the 90-day period from May to August 2026, was compiled through the group’s online portal and reviewed by industry sources.

Lloyds Banking Group, recognized as one of Britain’s largest financial services providers, accounted for 2,297 of these complaints, leading the list. Barclays, another major British bank, followed with 1,569 complaints, while NatWest Group received 1,278 complaints during the same period.

Customers flagged transfer limits, outright bans, or technical obstacles at several leading banks, raising concerns about access to crypto services as the UK moves toward new digital asset regulations in 2027.

Barclays and HSBC UK reportedly impose caps on cryptocurrency transfers, with maximums set at £2,500 (approximately $3,300) per transaction and £10,000 ($13,300) within a 30-day window.

Six banks, including Starling Bank, TSB, and Chase UK, have implemented outright bans on crypto-related transactions, effectively denying customers the ability to send money to digital asset platforms.

In contrast, Lloyds Banking Group and Revolut, a digital banking platform with significant UK presence, reportedly have “no published crypto transfer restrictions.” Still, both institutions received a notable volume of complaints. Revolut, in particular, references on its support page that transfers to some cryptocurrency exchanges are not supported, though Stand With Crypto attributed this issue to technical limitations rather than formal policy.

Industry leaders warn of setbacks for UK crypto ambitions

Nick Jones, the founder and CEO of Zumo, a digital asset platform serving both institutional and retail clients in the UK, stated that limited access to banking services is a persistent challenge for entrepreneurs in the sector.

According to Jones, cryptocurrency companies seeking a level playing field must be able to access basic banking services in order to grow and scale in the UK market.

Jones also cautioned that the introduction of the UK’s new regulatory framework for digital assets in 2027, which will require companies to obtain approval from the Financial Conduct Authority, does not guarantee banking access.

He emphasized that even with full regulatory authorization, crypto businesses may continue to face barriers when attempting to open business bank accounts, unless there is coordinated action between banks and regulators.
