The London Stock Exchange (LSE) plans to introduce a separate night trading venue in the first half of 2027, aiming to extend its hours and compete more directly with round-the-clock crypto trading platforms and US stock exchanges moving toward continuous operations.

Expanded trading hours and new products

The proposed night venue will operate from 17:00 to 07:50 London time, supplementing the existing standard trading period of 08:00 to 16:30. The initiative seeks to address increasing demand for after-hours market access, particularly from retail investors who often use mobile trading applications outside of conventional work hours.

At its launch, the LSE plans to support exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and equity index-tracking products. The stock exchange will later evaluate the possibility of including additional asset classes based on market interest and performance.

Global exchanges adopt round-the-clock access

The expansion comes as global equity markets accelerate efforts to offer nearly non-stop trading. In 2026, several major US exchanges secured regulatory clearance and began technical upgrades to extend their hours.

Nasdaq, one of the world’s largest stock exchanges, received approval from the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on April 10, 2026, for its “Night Session,” allowing 23-hour daily trading in all National Market System (NMS) equities. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) detailed its own 23-hour weekday schedule for NYSE Arca, running from 21:00 to 20:00 Eastern Time. Also, Cboe EDGX Equities Exchange finalized arrangements with the SEC to shift to a 23×5 model, with a launch targeted for late 2026, supported by advanced data infrastructure.

Mini dictionary: NMS (National Market System), a framework in the United States for facilitating efficient and transparent trading of equities across registered exchanges and alternative trading systems.

Retail investors drive demand for late trading

The surge in out-of-hours trading reflects a shift in investor preferences. Individuals are increasingly using digital platforms and apps to trade outside conventional exchange schedules. This trend places new demands on traditional financial markets to accommodate a global investor base with varied time zones and work patterns.

Outside standard hours, many participants use the quieter environment to review previous trades, evaluate performance, and plan for the next day. Common strategies during this period include analyzing successes, reinforcing trading discipline, identifying and learning from errors, and setting targets based on overnight futures and market data.

Market participants are adjusting routines, focusing on assessing trade results, maintaining adherence to protocols, identifying mistakes, and setting price goals for the upcoming session based on the latest available data.

Crypto and ETF products gain momentum in London

Meanwhile, new exchange-traded products reflecting the growing intersection of traditional markets and digital assets are reaching UK investors. On January 13, 2026, 21Shares, a Swiss-based crypto ETP issuer, launched its Bitcoin-Gold ETP, BOLD, on the London Stock Exchange. This product marks the first UK-listed ETP combining bitcoin and gold exposures.

Since its debut in Switzerland in 2022, BOLD has achieved a cumulative return of 122.5% in sterling terms. The product trades intraday with an expense ratio of 0.65%. The listing comes after the UK’s relaxation of crypto ETP rules in October 2025, which brought in $280 million in trading volume within the first month of deregulation.

Mini dictionary: 21Shares is a Swiss company specializing in cryptocurrency exchange-traded products (ETPs), offering investors regulated access to digital assets across multiple European exchanges.
