Louisiana State Comptroller John Fleming announced that the state has begun accepting Bitcoin 
$98,267, Bitcoin Lightning Network, and USD Coin as valid payment methods for state services. The first cryptocurrency payment was made today to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
Modernizing State Services
Dr. Fleming described this initiative as a critical step in modernizing state operations, stating, “In today’s digital age, state systems must evolve and embrace new technologies. By offering cryptocurrency as a payment option, we are not only innovating but also providing our citizens with flexibility and freedom in interacting with state services.”
The Transformation of Cryptocurrency Payments
Bitcoin payments will be converted to US dollars by Bead Pay, a company specializing in cryptocurrency conversion for state transactions. The announcement clarified that “the state of Louisiana will not engage in direct transactions with cryptocurrencies.” This system aims to protect the state from the volatility associated with cryptocurrencies, offering safe and efficient transactions while minimizing risks similar to credit or debit card payments.
Louisiana State Representative Mark Wright expressed his support for this initiative. He stated, “I take pride in having prepared numerous bills related to cryptocurrencies and leading the State Comptroller’s working group in 2022. I am excited to see Louisiana expanding payment options under Comptroller Fleming’s leadership. I hope to continue working with him and others to ensure Louisiana remains a leader in adopting digital payments.”
Louisiana anticipates that these new payment options will reduce fraud and enhance overall transaction security. While state residents can now use their private Bitcoin wallets to pay for services, the state will continue to accept payments in US dollars.
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has become the first state agency to utilize the new payment system, with more agencies expected to follow suit. Secretary Madison Sheahan remarked, “Providing our anglers with more ways to interact with our department enhances our customer service. This is another step toward our goal of creating a modern and professional organization that better serves the state’s anglers.”
