New York State Police have issued a warning to residents in the Twin Tiers region about a sophisticated scam that targets individuals through fraudulent investment schemes involving cryptocurrency and precious metals. Authorities say that victims are convinced to share sensitive financial information, leading to significant losses that often total their entire savings.
Scam Tactics and Local Impact
According to State Police investigators, scammers initiate contact by establishing a rapport with the victim before promoting investments in cryptocurrency, gold bars, or coins. The fraudsters then direct potential victims to a fraudulent website designed to mimic an authentic investment platform. Once individuals enter their banking or account credentials, their funds become vulnerable to theft.
Troopers urge residents to remain cautious if they receive unsolicited calls promoting investments in cryptocurrency or gold. Individuals receiving such calls are advised not to provide any financial information and to avoid visiting websites suggested by the caller.
The New York State Police recommend that anyone approached with these pitches hang up immediately and call 9-1-1. This advice is especially emphasized if the caller attempts to sell cryptocurrency while asking for financial details.
For those who believe they may have already fallen victim, authorities advise contacting local law enforcement or the State Police without delay. Victims should then reach out to their financial institutions to close affected accounts and mitigate potential financial damage.
IRS Issues Federal Warning
Just days before the state alert, IRS Criminal Investigation reported a separate scheme involving fraudulent IRS letters sent to cryptocurrency holders. The letters allege recipients must register on a “Digital Asset Compliance Portal” by a specified deadline, although no such portal exists.
The fake correspondence includes a QR code linking to a website that closely resembles the IRS website. Once on the fraudulent site, individuals are prompted to provide personal information, cryptocurrency wallet data, or exchange login credentials.
“The IRS does not operate a Digital Asset Compliance Portal. This is a scam,” the agency release unequivocally stated.
IRS Criminal Investigation Chief Jarod Koopman advised, “Before responding to unexpected requests for personal information, stop, verify the source, and report potential fraud schemes to law enforcement.”
While legitimate IRS notices such as CP53E letters may include QR codes, officials recommend taxpayers ignore QR codes on unsolicited mail and visit the IRS website directly for verification. Recipients may also contact the IRS using official contact information found online.
The agency has not detailed how fraudsters have acquired names and addresses of cryptocurrency holders. An IRS-CI spokesperson declined to disclose further information regarding the scale of the campaign.
Tracing the Fraudulent Operations
Coinbase and cybersecurity firm DarkTower linked the operation to a domain registered in Hong Kong and hosted in Romania, highlighting the international reach of these scams.
Similar schemes have appeared previously. In May, security experts documented cases where scammers sent fake “Quantum Resistance Security Update” letters to Ledger hardware wallet users. These letters, laced with QR codes, led to phishing sites that tricked users into revealing their 24-word recovery phrases.
Americans lost approximately $21 billion to cyber-enabled crimes and online scams in 2025, according to data cited by the FBI.
Coinbase and DarkTower have reported that these phishing campaigns are expertly executed, often exploiting advanced social engineering tactics and high-quality counterfeit websites to deceive even experienced investors.
To reduce exposure to such evolving risks, market participants are turning to tools that support safer investment oversight. CryptoAppsy, for example, streamlines portfolio tracking by integrating real-time prices, detailed charts, and multi-currency management on a single interface. With customizable price alerts, tailored news feeds, information on new altcoin listings, and instant access to market-moving macroeconomic factors such as Fed interest rates, investors can manage and monitor their assets more efficiently—helping them respond quickly to shifts and avoid threats.
