Ontario judge rejects delay for Crypto King fraud trial, Pleterski to self-represent

Aiden Pleterski, known as Canada’s “Crypto King,” is set to represent himself in a Toronto court as his four-week jury trial on charges of fraud over $5,000 and money laundering begins Monday. Ontario Superior Court Justice Shaun Nakatsuru refused Pleterski’s request to delay the proceedings so he could hire a lawyer.

No Adjournment Granted

Justice Nakatsuru emphasized that Pleterski would receive a fair trial despite the absence of legal counsel. The judge specifically outlined the “enhanced role” he would take, saying he would intervene to ensure inadmissible evidence does not reach the jury and would actively raise objections on Pleterski’s behalf.

In court, Nakatsuru advised Pleterski to feel completely at ease asking questions, stressing that he should never hesitate to seek clarification during the complicated proceedings.

I want to assure you that even though this isn’t your first choice, obviously, you will receive a fair trial. I want you to be very free in asking questions. Don’t hesitate, just get up on your feet and ask me.

Pleterski did have a lawyer, Marco Sciarra, for his adjournment application. Sciarra argued that Pleterski had attempted to secure trial counsel and that members of his extended family were prepared to liquidate assets for legal fees if a delay was granted. However, no details about these relatives or their assets were provided to the court.

Prosecution Challenges Pleterski’s Claims

Crown attorney Scott Patterson claimed Pleterski had not been honest or genuine in his efforts to hire a lawyer, pointing out the lack of evidence presented about possible funding sources. Justice Nakatsuru did not share his reasons publicly for denying the delay.

Pleterski was charged in May 2024 following a joint investigation by Durham Regional Police and the Ontario Securities Commission, who labeled the operation their largest fraud probe to date. The charges allege he defrauded investors out of tens of millions of dollars and laundered the resulting proceeds.

An associate, Colin Murphy, faces one count of fraud over $5,000. Murphy was previously jailed for five months in February after refusing to surrender his iPhone for a civil enforcement search and erasing its data. He was released in March after filing an appeal.

Pleterski, who has denied all allegations, was pushed into bankruptcy in the summer of 2022 after investors sought to reclaim roughly $40 million they had given him to trade in cryptocurrency and foreign exchange markets. Bankruptcy proceedings ultimately returned approximately $3 million to about 160 investors.

The trustee in those proceedings, Grant Thornton, determined that less than 2% of investor funds went into actual investments, with nearly $16 million reportedly spent on Pleterski’s personal expenses. Pleterski contests these findings.

In late 2022, Pleterski was abducted and tortured by a group seeking to recover funds. He was held for a $3 million ransom. Authorities said at least one person accused in the abduction pleaded guilty in 2023.
