PayPal Holdings reported second-quarter revenue of $8.68 billion, exceeding Wall Street’s $8.47 billion estimate. The payment giant’s latest financial statement highlighted strong performance across its payment ecosystem and key adjustments related to its crypto investments.

PayPal’s stablecoin and crypto positioning

The company removed an $81 million loss attributable to strategic investments and digital assets from its non-GAAP earnings calculation. PayPal stated that these assets, included in the loss figure, are held for investment and are not directly used in daily operations or for customer transactions. The move separates the impact of market-driven asset valuation changes from PayPal’s core operating results.

In recent quarters, PayPal’s management has emphasized expanding its digital asset initiatives. The launch of PYUSD, PayPal’s own stablecoin, places it alongside core growth projects such as improved branded checkout, the Venmo app, and digital authentication tools. PayPal described its approach as integrating digital dollars for settlement within its wider payment system, rather than using crypto as a treasury or speculative asset.

Adjusted earnings reached $1.38 per share in the second quarter, beating the $1.28 market estimate, while revenue surpassed expectations as well. The $81 million loss from investment holdings was excluded from non-GAAP results, reflecting PayPal’s treatment of such assets as separate from core payment activities.

Full-year adjusted earnings projections were raised to about $5.38 per share. PayPal’s transaction margin dollars rose to $3.9 billion, but the adjusted operating margin narrowed due to product mix and increased investment in new initiatives. Volume growth supported overall revenue, with total payment volume climbing 9%, reaching $486.4 billion on a currency-neutral basis.

PYUSD expansion and Kraken network developments

PYUSD is a stablecoin issued in partnership with Paxos and is backed by cash, Treasuries, and similar equivalents. The token is designed to be redeemable one-to-one for US dollars, with PayPal aiming for it to serve as a seamless digital settlement layer. The company has opened access to PYUSD in roughly 70 markets, a major step beyond its initial US and UK launch. This rollout allows eligible account holders to hold, send, receive, and transfer PYUSD, along with enabling select rewards features depending on the region.

Kraken, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, has added PYUSD on the Stellar network to its future expansion roadmap. While the exchange acknowledged the listing on its development plan, immediate PYUSD trading or funding on Stellar has not yet been confirmed. Kraken currently supports PYUSD on Ethereum and Solana networks, providing additional channels for digital dollar movement.

Mini dictionary: Paxos, a regulated blockchain infrastructure platform, serves as the issuer for several stablecoins, including PYUSD. It provides asset-backed tokens, compliance, and transparency for institutional and retail partners.

This gradual expansion supports PayPal’s efforts to integrate stablecoins with agentic payments, which use software agents to execute payments securely within user-defined limits. These features aim to support automated transactions, subscriptions, and supplier payments for consumers and merchants.

As PayPal pursues this strategy, the company also advances projects in digital identity, biometric authentication, and broad global distribution through partnerships and regional product introductions. The expansion of PYUSD through platforms like PayPal World and Venmo, subject to regulatory requirements, is aimed at increasing the use of digital dollars in everyday commerce while minimizing direct operational exposure to crypto market volatility.
