Solana’s attempt to strengthen its presence in mainland China was interrupted when the Shanghai opening of its Accelerate China 2026 tour was suspended following an unexpected police presence at the venue.
Unforeseen law enforcement intervention
On October 16, around eight or nine law enforcement officers were seen at the event site in Shanghai, according to reports from participants. Several attendees said they were denied entry for more than an hour, with many waiting outside the venue for updates.
Shortly afterward, the organizers notified registered guests that the morning program would be postponed, attributing the delay to “logistical arrangements.” No revised timing was given, leaving both attendees and industry watchers uncertain about the event’s future.
There has been no official public statement from either the Solana Foundation, the non-profit organization focused on supporting the Solana blockchain ecosystem, or local Chinese authorities confirming that government regulators specifically ordered the event to be halted.
Industry reaction and past incidents
Changpeng Zhao, popularly known as CZ and the co-founder of Binance, commented on the situation via the social platform X. He suggested that the organizers may not have been fully aware of local requirements and recalled that a similar disruption affected a Solana event in Shenzhen in 2025, when police questioned attendees on site.
CZ questioned whether Solana’s team properly accounted for China’s regulatory environment and referenced a comparable incident from the previous year in Shenzhen.
CZ’s comments came just a day after he publicly praised Solana’s growing momentum in China, making the setback particularly notable within the crypto community.
The Accelerate China 2026 series was planned as a four-city tour to boost Solana’s visibility in key Chinese tech hubs, with events focused on blockchain infrastructure, artificial intelligence, payments, and developer tools scheduled for Hangzhou, Shenzhen, and Beijing in the coming days. The official itinerary on Solana’s website continued to list these events as upcoming.
Whether these subsequent stops will occur as planned remains unclear and could signal if the Shanghai incident was a singular venue issue or points to larger regulatory challenges affecting Solana’s ambitions in the Chinese market.
