Crypto researcher SMQKE has identified single-block settlement finality as a defining feature that could drive institutional interest in XRP and XLM. This characteristic, which allows transactions to achieve finality within a single block, is increasingly sought after by financial institutions exploring blockchain-based settlements and tokenized assets.

XRP Ledger brings DVP to large-scale finance

Lauren Berta, stablecoin lead at Ripple, addressed the importance of settlement finality during her presentation at TokenizeThis, an event organized by RedStone. She underscored the strong connection between single-block finality and key institutional settlement practices, such as delivery versus payment (DVP).

Berta stated that DVP—where the delivery of an asset and its corresponding payment occur simultaneously—is fundamental for large-scale financial operations. She referenced Ripple’s collaborations with Aviva and Franklin Templeton on proof-of-concept projects involving repurchase agreements, highlighting the necessity for both parties to sign transactions before simultaneous execution can take place.

She emphasized that, for institutions, the certainty provided by single-block settlement is crucial. It ensures that a completed transaction is immediately irreversible, which is especially important for coordinating high-value transfers.

Ripple’s Lauren Berta underscored that the XRP Ledger enables single-block finality, connecting this feature to institutional needs for certainty in transactions that require simultaneous settlement between both parties.

Berta contrasted the XRP Ledger and Stellar with popular proof-of-stake networks that often require multiple confirmations before transactions are considered fully settled. Although the likelihood of reversal becomes very low after several confirmations, this added waiting period can become a major hurdle for businesses handling large volumes of transactions.

Operational impact and Ripple’s approach with MintBurn

Berta also elaborated on Ripple’s settlement practices on other blockchains, mentioning the company’s MintBurn product. She disclosed that Ripple typically waits for up to 20 blocks before recognizing a transaction as settled on certain chains, even in cases where custody platforms like Fireblocks require fewer confirmations.

This approach, while conservative, results in operational delays. Berta made it clear that delivering enough certainty before releasing assets is essential for Ripple’s business partners, especially as trading volumes grow.

She went on to identify both Stellar and the XRP Ledger as networks capable of providing single-block finality. This capability, Berta noted, enables more efficient and scalable settlement for high-volume payment companies.

Settlement architecture and institutional adoption

SMQKE cited Berta’s analysis as evidence that both XRP and XLM offer a settlement architecture well suited to institutional requirements. According to SMQKE, single-block finality provides exactly what financial institutions look for in a digital asset network—speed and settlement certainty.

Berta suggested that as blockchain adoption matures in the financial sector, the underlying structure of a network could play a growing role in influencing liquidity decisions. She said that mature enterprises require a high degree of certainty regarding transaction consensus and cannot afford delays or uncertainty in settlement.

SMQKE pointed to speed and immediate finality as central reasons why institutions may increasingly opt for XRP and XLM in blockchain settlement processes.

As banks and payment processors launch new applications for tokenized assets and blockchain payments, the ability to achieve completion in a single block could become a determining factor in their choice of networks. SMQKE maintains that this unique advantage positions XRP and XLM as leading solutions for institutions seeking secure, efficient, and scalable digital asset settlements.
