Ripple, a San Francisco-based blockchain payments company, is piloting credit-related initiatives that could see XRP used as collateral in lending protocols, with implementation planned for 2027. President Monica Long discussed the development at XRP Seoul, highlighting a shift from XRP’s established role as a bridge asset to a new function in credit markets.
XRP transitions from fast settlement to collateralization
Traditionally, XRP has operated as a bridge currency, facilitating buying, transferring, and selling transactions within seconds. Ripple is now evaluating whether XRP deposited in liquidity pools could serve as collateral for lending, helping payment clients who need short-term financing before their own funds are available.
The shift could see a portion of XRP supply locked as collateral for the duration of loans, rather than returning immediately to circulation after a transaction. Long explained that the company aims to integrate payments, credit, the XRP Ledger (XRPL), and lending protocols.
Such integration may significantly affect the XRP ecosystem, as using tokens as collateral ties them up longer and supports a wider range of financial applications compared to rapidly circulated payment liquidity.
Ripple’s plan could lead to increased lending activity and a greater share of XRP being locked in productive financial applications rather than just moving rapidly as settlement liquidity.
The initiative is an extension of earlier discussions around using XRP as collateral for institutional credit. Jazzi Cooper, RippleX product chief, previously identified this as a potential “killer use case,” and XRPL developers are actively working on native lending capabilities.
XRPL’s lending infrastructure and market expansion
The XRP Ledger is moving beyond basic payments, with teams currently developing lending infrastructure at the protocol level. The proposed XRPL Lending Protocol will introduce features such as Single Asset Vaults and lending marketplaces, aiming to allow tokenized assets to serve as active collateral.
Ripple, in collaboration with Clearpool and Cicada, is building a lending market on XRPL that will focus initially on RLUSD and serve institutional borrowers. The project is part of a broader effort to create competitive decentralized finance (DeFi) solutions for large-scale customers on the XRP Ledger.
These developments reflect Ripple’s ambition to grow the role of XRP beyond fast payments and position it as a core asset in onchain credit markets by the end of 2027.
Mini dictionary: Single Asset Vaults are specialized smart contracts within blockchain lending protocols that hold one type of token, allowing depositors to lend or use that token as collateral for borrowing other assets. They are designed to facilitate risk management and liquidity within decentralized lending systems.
| Function | XRP as Bridge Asset | XRP as Loan Collateral |
|---|---|---|
| Liquidity Duration | Seconds, returns rapidly to circulation | Tied up for loan duration (longer term) |
| Main Use | Settlement of payments | Backing credit, supporting lending |
| Financial Impact | Low impact on circulating supply | Reduces available supply while pledged |
