This latest transaction, completed on the first day of September, is part of Ripple’s ongoing escrow mechanism initiated in 2017 to manage the supply and distribution of XRP.
Escrow Structure and Remaining Supply
The escrow release unfolded through three distinct blockchain transactions: 500 million, 400 million, and 100 million XRP were unlocked from Ripple-controlled escrow accounts. Ripple’s escrow system originally locked away 55 billion XRP in 2017, with a cap of up to 1 billion XRP becoming available at the start of every month.
Before this latest unlock, 32.28 billion XRP remained locked in Ripple’s on-ledger escrow, based on data from on-chain trackers that calculate the escrow balance directly from active objects on the XRP Ledger (XRPL). Following the September release, approximately 31.28 billion XRP continue to be held in escrow under Ripple’s management. This figure now represents just over 31% of the total maximum supply of 100 billion XRP.

Ripple clarified that an escrow unlock does not necessarily mean the company will sell the entire released amount on the open market. Historically, Ripple has re-escrowed a considerable share of each monthly allocation, so the actual amount of XRP circulating into the broader market can be significantly less than 1 billion XRP.
