Account breach and response

Tenev returned to X on Thursday, assuring followers that Robinhood had not issued any cryptocurrency token or coin, contrary to the claims made by the hackers. He stated that the company is collaborating with X’s security team to determine the details of the attack and restore full control.

“I’m back. We are awaiting details from the X team to better understand what happened. In case it wasn’t clear, Robinhood has not issued any coins or tokens. Stay safe out there,” Tenev posted upon regaining access.

Robinhood, a major U.S.-based trading platform known for commission-free stock and crypto trading, also released an official statement. The company confirmed that the breach involved Tenev’s personal X account and resulted in the unauthorized promotion of a fabricated meme coin to his followers.

Robinhood’s communications team stated that Tenev’s X account was compromised to post a fake meme coin promotion, and indicated that the unauthorized content had since been removed as the company worked with X to restore access.

Trend of social media exploits

The incident follows a growing trend in which attackers target high-profile figures in the cryptocurrency sector and beyond, commandeering their social media profiles to push deceptive crypto offerings and digital asset giveaways aimed at scamming the public.

These attacks leverage the public trust established by corporate leaders, entrepreneurs, or official institutions, boosting the reach and apparent credibility of the scam promotions. The goal typically centers on tricking unsuspecting users into participating in fraudulent token sales or sending funds in exchange for promised rewards that never materialize.

Several similar events have emerged over the past years. In 2020, multiple high-visibility X accounts, including those belonging to Elon Musk, were compromised in a large-scale effort to promote a fake Bitcoin giveaway.

In September 2023, attackers infiltrated Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin’s X account to advertise a counterfeit NFT giveaway, again relying on the account’s authority to spread misinformation and attract victims.

Some hackers have used even more inventive tactics. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) experienced an X account breach that led to a premature, false announcement regarding the approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs. This event caused Bitcoin’s price to surge suddenly before the false report was corrected.

Earlier in the month, Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky’s X account was also seized by hackers who published a lengthy discussion about blockchain tokenization and real-world asset integration. The unusual focus sparked speculation among followers about the motives behind the fraudulent content.

Mini dictionary: X (formerly Twitter) is a popular social media platform widely used by public figures, brands, and crypto projects. High-profile accounts on X are frequently targeted by hackers to spread scams or misinformation to a large audience.
