Starknet, originally developed as a scaling solution for Ethereum, has taken a crucial step toward becoming a fully independent blockchain. StarkWare, the company behind Starknet, asked its community to vote on whether the network should move away from Ethereum and operate as its own autonomous Layer 1 blockchain.

Community vote triggers strong market response

The announcement immediately sparked market activity. In early October, STRK, the platform’s native token, soared 200% before paring gains in line with broader market trends. On the day the official vote was launched, STRK recorded another significant rally, climbing 25% at one stage during the session.

Derivatives trading dominated the action, with daily futures volumes climbing to $894.84 million—almost eight times higher than spot volumes, which reached $116.38 million. This surge coincided with an unlocking of 127 million STRK tokens for early investors, further escalating volatility and overall market participation.

Trading volumes on the STRK futures market soared past $894 million as investor interest surged following the independence vote launch.

Quantum resistance and independence from Ethereum

Eli Ben-Sasson, CEO of StarkWare, has highlighted that the move is motivated by the need for enhanced security against future threats posed by quantum computing. Ben-Sasson believes that rapid advances in artificial intelligence bring the era of quantum machines closer, increasing the risk to existing cryptographic standards.

Starknet’s technical roadmap is aligned with the goal of deploying quantum-resistant features as early as 2027. This stands in contrast to Ethereum’s current timeline, which aims to introduce similar security upgrades closer to the end of 2029. The project’s leadership has argued that becoming independent would enable it to move faster on critical security upgrades.

Community support, but security trade-offs remain

A poll on the Snapshot platform, which will run until October 22, reflects overwhelming support for independence, with 99.88% voting in favor. Despite this show of support, the current vote is preliminary and non-binding, signaling only that detailed research and further votes lie ahead before any technical transition would begin.

STRK is set to remain the network’s exclusive settlement asset, and existing bridges to Ethereum will continue to function during and after the transition process, ensuring a degree of continuity for users and developers.

However, analysts caution that by leaving Ethereum’s umbrella, Starknet would forfeit the established security provided by Ethereum’s validator network. Currently, transactions on Starknet benefit from the protection of Ethereum’s multi-billion-dollar staked validator base. As an independent blockchain, the network’s security will rely strictly on the capitalization and security model of STRK.

STRK’s market capitalization is currently $580.24 million, significantly lower than Ethereum’s, highlighting the increased challenges facing a newly independent network.

The preliminary referendum only authorizes continued research and community discussion, meaning any final technical migration from Ethereum will require months of preparation and additional votes.
