Strategy, recognized as the world’s largest publicly traded Bitcoin holder, has overtaken BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) for the first time since the start of the second quarter of 2024. The company recently drew attention by adding 34,164 BTC to its reserves, boosting its total holdings to 815,061 BTC.
Historic Bitcoin race intensifies with IBIT
Currently, BlackRock’s IBIT fund holds 802,824 BTC, placing Strategy approximately 12,200 Bitcoin ahead of its rival. While the margin may not be enormous in absolute terms, Strategy’s lead carries symbolic weight given IBIT’s meteoric rise. Since its launch, IBIT has made history as the fastest exchange-traded fund (ETF) to reach $70 billion in assets, becoming a core driver of BlackRock’s revenue streams.
At the beginning of 2024, Strategy’s Bitcoin portfolio stood at 189,150 BTC, while IBIT surged ahead in early Q2 with roughly 273,000 BTC. At that same time, Strategy had only 214,400 BTC. Although IBIT maintained its advantage for a period, the recent major acquisition shifted the balance significantly.
Thanks to its latest purchase of 34,164 BTC, Strategy’s total shot up to 815,061, overtaking IBIT for the first time. Much of Strategy’s abrupt accumulation can be traced to newly secured fund inflows and an innovative financing structure.
Divergent approaches yield different outcomes
The two heavyweights stand out with their contrasting investment strategies. Strategy, a traditional operating company, aggressively collects Bitcoin using financial tools like equity issuance, convertible bonds, and perpetual preferred shares—essentially leveraging its capital to maximize its holdings. In contrast, IBIT is a spot ETF, giving investors direct, passive exposure to Bitcoin’s price without leveraging or operational risk.
Since the start of the year, IBIT has gained around 55% in value. However, Strategy’s leveraged investment approach enabled it to soar by up to 250% in the same period, with recent purchases and financial leverage playing a decisive role in this outperformance.
Strategic maneuvers reshape the field
Strategy’s latest capital-raising mechanism, perpetual preferred shares known as STRC, provided the flexibility and scale required to speed up Bitcoin acquisitions and fuel further growth. With this structure, the company managed to accumulate close to 80,000 BTC between 2024 and 2026.
Meanwhile, IBIT recently experienced a slight decline in its total Bitcoin holdings, though the overall size of the fund has generally remained steady.
In summary, although Strategy and BlackRock’s IBIT take distinctly different paths and use divergent tools, their rivalry over Bitcoin accumulation is being closely watched across the industry. These moves are reshaping the strategies of major investors and signaling a shift in the balance of power within the cryptocurrency market.
