Two brothers from Waller, Texas, have been sentenced to a total of 366 months in federal prison for orchestrating an armed robbery that resulted in the theft of more than $8 million in cryptocurrency from a Minnesota family.
Sentencing and armed robbery details
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota stated that Raymond Christian Garcia received a 180-month sentence, while his brother Isiah Angelo Garcia was sentenced to 186 months in prison. U.S. District Judge Donovan W. Frank delivered the sentences following both men’s guilty pleas to interference with commerce by robbery.
According to prosecutors, the Garcias traveled from Texas to a residence in Grant, Minnesota, on September 19, 2025, intending to target the family’s cryptocurrency holdings. Court filings say they restrained the victims with zip ties and held them at gunpoint for over nine hours during the ordeal.
Raymond Garcia reportedly guarded the wife and adult son with an AR-15-style rifle, while Isiah Garcia compelled the father, referred to as Victim 1, to transfer significant digital assets to an account under their control.
As the initial transaction failed to meet the brothers’ demands, Isiah Garcia forced Victim 1 to drive nearly three hours to a remote cabin in northern Minnesota to retrieve a hardware wallet containing further assets. The total amount stolen exceeded $8 million.
In court, the Garcias agreed to pay more than $8 million in restitution to the victims as part of their plea deal.
Court documents describe how the family was bound with zip ties and held at gunpoint for over nine hours, while the assailants transferred more than $8 million in cryptocurrency to accounts they controlled.
Investigation and arrests
The brothers fled the scene after the family’s son managed to contact emergency services. Deputies later discovered a suitcase in the tree line behind the home containing a disassembled AR-15-style rifle, ammunition, and a Wendy’s receipt. Investigators used this receipt to track a rental car back to Texas, which led authorities to locate and arrest the Garcias near their home in Waller.
Initially, the Washington County complaint estimated the value of stolen cryptocurrency at around $72,000. However, the U.S. Attorney’s Office later confirmed the actual amount exceeded $8 million.
Victims reported suspicions of leaked personal information due to a prior data breach. Court records indicate the Garcias were frequently in contact with an unidentified third party, receiving real-time details on the victims’ cryptocurrency accounts.
Physical crypto attacks on the rise
The incident forms part of a wider global trend known as “wrench attacks,” in which criminals use force to steal digital assets. Chainalysis identified 46 such attacks in the first half of 2026 worldwide, with home invasions rising sharply from a single case in 2025 to 20 in 2026. CertiK, a Web3 security firm, reported 34 wrench attacks in just the first four months of 2026, resulting in $101 million in losses. Notably, 82% of these cases occurred in France.
Chainalysis reported a global surge in wrench attacks targeting crypto holders, with the number of home invasions related to digital asset theft jumping from one in 2025 to 20 in the first half of 2026.
In light of recent physical crypto thefts, the ability to set up real-time smart alerts for large transactions can help investors closely monitor their holdings. CryptoAppsy’s multi-asset interface allows users to receive instant price movement notifications, helping them respond quickly to suspicious activity on their wallets and safeguard significant digital assets.
