A notable trend has emerged as several top marketing executives from cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase have moved to artificial intelligence company OpenAI over the past year. This shift reflects a growing industry movement from blockchain-focused roles toward the fast-expanding AI sector, capturing attention within the tech job market.
Key leaders depart Coinbase for OpenAI
Starting at the end of 2024, a series of senior managers left Coinbase’s marketing team to take up high-profile roles at OpenAI within a short timeframe. The first to make this transition was Sarah Russell, who joined OpenAI as Vice President of Integrated Marketing and Operations in November 2024 after serving just over a year as Director of Integrated Marketing at Coinbase. Russell’s prior experience includes a stint at Meta, formerly known as Facebook.
Just a month later, former Coinbase Chief Marketing Officer Kate Rouch became OpenAI’s top marketing executive. Rouch had spent three and a half years at Coinbase, and before that held senior roles in brand and product marketing at Meta for more than 11 years.
In March 2025, Elke Karstens was appointed as Head of International Marketing at OpenAI. Before this role, Karstens briefly held a position at London-based fintech startup Finom and accumulated over a decade of various marketing roles at Meta prior to that.
Sequential moves from the same department
Further high-level departures followed. In September 2025, Kaitlin Gianetti left Coinbase and, within a month, assumed the role of Integrated Marketing Management Lead at OpenAI. Gianetti brought over four years of experience as Marketing Director at Coinbase and had previously led brand marketing at Meta. That same month, Amy Robbins switched from her role as Insights Manager at Coinbase to become Brand Insights Lead at OpenAI.
The most recent move came in December 2025 when Nina Mogavero, who spent three years in marketing and strategy at Coinbase, joined OpenAI’s marketing strategy and operations department.
According to a source familiar with the matter, the concentrated move of senior managers from Coinbase to OpenAI is no coincidence. Within the industry, Kate Rouch is said to have played a central role in these transitions, helping integrate her former Coinbase colleagues into OpenAI’s ranks.
While Kate Rouch has declined to comment on the situation, Coinbase has stated that its marketing department remains robust with over 150 employees. The exchange emphasized that the staff changes have not impacted the wider team and described such movements as standard for the industry.
Other Coinbase staff pivoting to AI
OpenAI has continued to attract former Coinbase talent from other departments as well. Tom Duff Gordon, Coinbase’s former Vice President of International Policy, recently became OpenAI’s EMEA Policy Lead. Product Manager Yi X joined OpenAI’s team in April 2025. In addition, Alexandra Fitzroy, Head of Design for Coinbase’s decentralized platform Base, departed the company in October 2025; meanwhile, data scientist Abe Sprague made the switch to OpenAI in September 2024.
The AI sector has also welcomed Coinbase names outside OpenAI. In late 2024, Sarah Wolf, who led marketing for Coinbase’s crypto infrastructure solution Base for five years, left to become Marketing Director at the AI company Anthropic.
The flow of talent between these two leading technology firms is widely seen as a tangible indicator of shifting interest from the crypto industry toward artificial intelligence. Coinbase, based in the United States, is a major player in cryptocurrency trading, while OpenAI, known for products like ChatGPT, stands out in the AI arena.
