Ilya Lichtenstein has been identified as the mastermind behind the largest cryptocurrency exchange hack, Bitfinex. US prosecutors recommended a five-year prison sentence for Lichtenstein in front of a district judge in Washington. Lichtenstein and his wife, Heather Morgan, accepted a money laundering conspiracy related to the $6 billion hack of Bitfinex.
Prosecutors’ Sentencing Requests
The US government is seeking at least a five-year prison sentence for Ilya Lichtenstein. This request comes during the asset seizure process related to one of the largest cryptocurrency heists, the $6 billion Bitfinex attack.
In a court filing last week, defendant Heather Morgan was recommended for 18 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. Morgan, along with her husband Lichtenstein, confessed to the charges. Federal prosecutors noted, “A strong sentence in this case would help break this cycle.”
Lichtenstein and Morgan’s Crimes
Lichtenstein admitted to being the planner of the Bitfinex hack in 2016. His wife Morgan assisted in covering up the stolen cryptocurrency even after learning of Lichtenstein’s involvement in the hack in 2020.
Reasons for Sentencing Requests
Due to Lichtenstein’s cooperation with prosecutors in other criminal cases, a shorter prison sentence is being requested. Earlier this year, he was sentenced in a money laundering case involving the cryptocurrency mixer Bitcoin

Lichtenstein and Morgan concealed their tracks using advanced techniques for money laundering. According to Bloomberg, they utilized the stolen funds by depositing and withdrawing through cryptocurrency exchanges and darknet markets. With the income generated, they purchased NFTs, gold, and various gift cards.
The US government identified that Bitfinex is the only party harmed by the 2016 Bitcoin hack. Thus, the company’s support plays a crucial role in the process of compensating Bitfinex’s losses.
While legal proceedings continue, strong penalties are expected to contribute to the prevention of similar crimes. The role of regulatory agencies is growing in enhancing security within the cryptocurrency space.
