Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin has announced a landmark technical collaboration set to dramatically boost both the speed and censorship resistance of the network. By bringing together the FOCIL system and the EIP-8141 protocol, this new architecture aims to support everything from smart wallets to privacy-focused transactions, all while preserving Ethereum’s hallmark decentralization. Designed to overcome current processing bottlenecks, the system promises to future-proof Ethereum’s core ethos as it scales.
Breakthroughs in Censorship Resistance
According to details shared by Buterin, the FOCIL protocol enables 17 randomly selected participants to contribute to every block slot. This dynamic process ensures that, even if malicious actors attempt interference, all transactions are reliably included in the next one or two slots—protecting activity on the network from potential censorship or delay. With a core capacity of 8 kilobytes, which can be further expanded as needed, FOCIL clears obstacles for sponsored transactions and concealed transfers, paving the way for smoother on-chain operations.
Pairing with FOCIL, EIP-8141 builds on the 7701 standard to grant native on-chain functionality to smart wallets and privacy-oriented transaction types. Instead of treating these accounts as second-class citizens within the network, the new protocol deeply embeds them in Ethereum’s foundational layer, enabling seamless and intuitive user experiences. The interplay between these two protocols creates a network that is more robust against outside intervention and even friendlier for end-users.
Technical Architecture That Upholds Decentralization
A standout feature of the new system is its approach to MEV (Maximum Extractable Value) management. Unlike alternatives such as MCP, which afford significant influence to block proposers, FOCIL, combined with ePBS (external Proposer-Builder Separation), distributes oversight more evenly. This structural decision prevents any central point of control from emerging and safeguards Ethereum’s democratic, decentralized spirit, while still fostering a healthy, competitive landscape for network participants.
The protocol also provides notable technical flexibility. By optimizing data sizes, it delivers a meaningful boost to network performance. The practice of selecting 17 validators at random for each block slot further eliminates the risk of any single entity gaining dominance over the system. As Buterin has emphasized, these advances help cement Ethereum not just as a transfer platform but as an uncensorable, high-speed global computer for the digital age.
In practical terms, this technology milestone enables new transaction models where costs can be sponsored and processed at previously unattainable speeds.
