Vitalik Buterin favors ETH as store of value, questions reliance on fee burns

In Brief

  • 🔥 Vitalik Buterin says $ETH's true value lies in decentralization and security.

  • 🧑‍💻 He questions if past crypto-driven fee burns can support long-term valuation.

  • 📉 During crypto peaks, fee burns rose but may not provide a stable price floor.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has stated that ETH’s primary appeal should be its role as a store of value, rather than tying its valuation to network transaction fee burns. In a series of posts on X, Buterin presented several arguments for emphasizing decentralization, security, and sustainability over a fee-based narrative.

Buterin challenges ETH fee-burn model

Buterin questioned the assumption that destroyed network fees can reliably underpin ETH’s valuation over the long term. According to his analysis, the period between 2021 and 2023 saw unusually high fee burns driven mainly by speculative trading activity within crypto and the surge in digital collectibles. He argued that, in the event of a significant downturn in ETH prices, the economic forces fueling those fee burns would likely fade as well, weakening the supposed valuation floor.

He explained that simple discounted-cash-flow approaches, which equate annually burned fees to economic value accruing to holders, rely heavily on constant demand. According to Buterin, real-world demand for tokenized assets could diversify sources of burned fees, but would likely fall short of the speculative heights that brought about record daily burns of nearly $180 million in the past.

Buterin observed that the major fee burns of previous years were driven largely by speculative activity, making fee-based valuation models unreliable during market downturns, when holders would desire security the most.

Risks to decentralization from high fee-focused governance

Expanding on his position, Buterin noted that maximizing ETH’s value through a fee-focused model could push Ethereum toward a more centralized and interventionist governance structure. He suggested that, to justify a hypothetical $270 billion valuation purely from burned fees, Ethereum might have to operate like a large corporation, allocating around 700,000 ETH each year to protocol research and development.

This approach, he warned, could increase spending oversight and intervention, undermining Ethereum’s core principles of decentralization and resistance to capture. Higher network fees would also make the blockchain less accessible, especially for those who value privacy, security, and censorship resistance.

Buterin maintained that emphasizing fee revenue could compromise decentralization, as such a strategy would require more direct governance and increase the risk of Ethereum functioning similarly to a major corporate entity.

He also reaffirmed the importance of Ethereum’s EIP-1559 mechanism, which burns base transaction fees, but advised holders not to be alarmed if the proportion of burned fees remains consistently below 10% of the break-even level in the years ahead.

Store-of-value argument centers on security and CROPS principles

Buterin connected ETH’s long-term store-of-value stance to the network’s fundamental principles: censorship and capture resistance, open-source development, privacy, and security (known collectively as CROPS). The Ethereum Foundation formally highlighted these priorities earlier in 2026 as central to the network’s development mandate.

For ETH holders, he emphasized the importance of reliable asset preservation. Achieving this requires secure and stable protocol decisions, minimal political interference, and efficient, private transfers without the need for intermediaries. He also addressed potential risks posed by future artificial intelligence development, suggesting that resilient decentralized infrastructure will become increasingly essential for safeguarding assets against institutional or technological shifts.

Buterin argued that ETH’s utility remains higher if assets are stored directly on Ethereum’s base layer, enabling trustless exchange and collateralization without additional intermediaries.

As Ethereum’s macroeconomic landscape evolves and questions over network fees persist, real-time tracking becomes even more vital for serious holders. CryptoAppsy’s smart price alerts and coin-specific news features help users monitor sudden changes in fee burn rates, protocol updates, and valuation shifts, so they can make informed decisions without having to watch the network continuously.
