Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has shared his long-term vision for the network, outlining major changes he believes will transform Ethereum into much more than a traditional blockchain. In an essay and accompanying post on X dated September 27, Buterin discussed sweeping upgrades in technology and functionality he expects by 2030.
From blockchain to hybrid computer
Buterin described Ethereum’s direction as a transition beyond the familiar concept of a blockchain ledger. He suggested that, in the coming years, Ethereum will rely increasingly on advanced cryptographic techniques and external infrastructure while still maintaining its core transaction history.
Buterin stated that Ethereum is “really not just a blockchain anymore.” He envisions a future where cryptographic proofs and decentralized reliability take the place of older, resource-heavy verification models.
His essay detailed a target for Ethereum to achieve faster finality, enhanced privacy, and lighter verification by 2030. These changes are designed to improve network efficiency while preserving decentralization. Buterin acknowledged that, up until now, much of the network’s security relied on participants independently repeating every calculation to verify correctness—a method both effective and resource-intensive.
Efficiency through cryptographic proofs
Looking forward, Buterin highlighted that modern cryptography enables participants to verify calculations through proofs rather than by duplicating every operation. This fundamental shift, he argued, will allow Ethereum to scale and offer more robust data handling.
Earlier attempts to distribute tasks across the network encountered stumbling blocks, particularly in reliable verification. Committees assigned to validate work added cost, complexity, and new vulnerabilities. According to Buterin, reliable verification was the missing ingredient, which has now been addressed with recent cryptographic advancements.
The evolving approach will let users focus on critical operations within the Ethereum ledger, while supportive computing occurs off-chain. The plan, according to Buterin, aims to reduce processing demands without compromising security or decentralization.
Implications for developers and users
Buterin emphasized that not all computations should bear the same cost in future versions of Ethereum. Developers who split applications into independent tasks—allowing parallel execution—could see lower fees. In contrast, apps that process everything in a linear sequence would become more expensive.
He also suggested that combining multiple proofs and signatures before they are included in blocks could further streamline the network. “When building applications, structure of computation is starting to matter a lot,” Buterin noted, emphasizing the importance of efficient design.
For end users, these upgrades are projected to deliver faster transaction inclusion guarantees, heightened privacy measures, and lighter requirements for operating nodes. Buterin projects finality times between eight and 32 seconds under his 2030 vision—though he clarified these remain future targets.
Ongoing challenges include making cryptographic proofs secure and practical at scale, as well as managing large volumes of application data. Buterin remarked that while encrypted computing via obfuscation remains a possibility, immediate efforts focus on currently achievable advances.
He also set expectations around network speed, stating that Ethereum’s base layer will not match centralized servers in latency, though related infrastructure could achieve lower response times.
Transition to advanced era after Hegota
Buterin identified the Hegota upgrade, scheduled for 2027, as possibly Ethereum’s last “normal” hard fork—referring to technology recognizable to early adopters. After this milestone, development will center on sophisticated cryptographic proofs, formal verification, and consensus model optimizations.
