Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has underscored that no individual or group exerts control over the Ethereum network, seeking to address ongoing debates about the influence of his personal views within the community. Buterin’s latest remarks come in response to frequent discussions suggesting that his preferences shape the platform’s direction.
Core Values: Openness and Resilience
Buterin emphasized that Ethereum is an open, permissionless, and censorship-resistant system. Participation—whether developing an application, conducting a transaction, or engaging with the protocol—does not require the approval of any individual, including himself or the core developers. Even projects or uses that diverge from his own perspectives have the right to exist on Ethereum.
Diverging Opinions and Freedom of Expression
Acknowledging the ongoing debate around his critiques of projects within the Ethereum ecosystem, Buterin noted that some in the community perceive him as dismissive of initiatives that do not align with his views. However, he reiterated that everyone remains free to use Ethereum regardless of their stance, just as he retains the right to offer public criticism of any application or project.
According to Buterin, open platforms thrive on environments where free debate and diverse opinions can flourish. He stressed the importance of protocols serving as neutral infrastructure, welcoming a variety of perspectives as a fundamental feature of decentralization.
To use Ethereum, you don’t need to agree with me about which applications are appropriate or what kinds of trust are acceptable. Even in completely unrelated areas—like political issues—you’re free to benefit from Ethereum regardless of whether you share my views.
Buterin further clarified that, like any other stakeholder, he has the right to express diverse viewpoints publicly. He highlighted the core function of protocols as impartial providers of infrastructure, while allowing users, developers, and entrepreneurs the space to form and share their individual perspectives.
Parallels Between Linux and Ethereum’s Open Ecosystems
Drawing a comparison to decentralized systems, Buterin pointed to Linux as a model for open-source success. While Linux serves a variety of purposes for many different users, its underlying technology remains accessible to all. Buterin argued that Ethereum operates under the same principles, accommodating projects with competing visions on the same network.
He reiterated Ethereum’s flexibility as a platform, capable of supporting a wide range of use cases simultaneously. There is no obligation for network participants to align with Buterin’s individual outlook—the priority is to maintain an open and impartial network for all.
In addition, Buterin called on developers working in Ethereum’s Layer 2 ecosystem to prioritize innovation over repetition, encouraging original solutions rather than replicating existing applications.
