The decentralized exchange (DEX) built into the XRP Ledger processed more than 4,200 trades through its native bridge asset, XRP, in a 72-hour period, according to Vet, an active validator on the network. The recent visualization shared by Vet demonstrated the XRP Ledger’s distinctive auto-bridging protocol functioning at scale and highlighted thousands of trades routed automatically through XRP to optimize execution for traders.
How auto-bridging powers the XRPL DEX
Auto-bridging is a built-in feature of the XRP Ledger DEX that enables trade offers between two assets (IOUs) to settle through XRP when this route produces a better deal for users. This automation occurs at the protocol level, requiring no extra input from the trader. As a result, every trade on the XRPL DEX can access the deepest available liquidity on the network instead of being split across fragmented pools.
Over a 72-hour snapshot, the DEX processed a total of 4,200 IOU-to-IOU trade offers via auto-bridging, with over 6,700 XRP routed in total. The majority of sell-side volume came from XAH trades, with 4,265 XRP trades and 4,232 XRP sold, while RLUSD dominated the receive side, recording 4,247 trades and 5,153 XRP received. This trading activity reflects the XRP Ledger’s core design as a single, unified venue for cross-asset trades.
“XRP is the native bridge asset of the XRP Ledger. This is a live look of the last 72 hours on the XRPL DEX of trades going through XRP. It’s a protocol-native functionality doing this by default. The XRPL routes automatically DEX offers through $XRP if it improves the trade quality,” Vet explained in his visualization.
Mini dictionary: Auto-bridging refers to the automatic routing of trades through a network’s primary asset (in this case, XRP) instead of requiring users to manually select bridges, ensuring optimal rates and increased liquidity for decentralized trades.
| Asset | Trades (Last 72h) | XRP Routed/Sold |
|---|---|---|
| XAH (sell side) | 4,265 | 4,232 XRP |
| RLUSD (receive side) | 4,247 | 5,153 XRP |
XAH trade dominance and cross-chain movement
Questions from community members focused on the consistently high XAH volume displayed in the visualization. Vet attributed this to an active market maker operating in that specific order book. He also pointed out that XAH, a digital asset issued on the XRP Ledger, maintains genuine demand. Users frequently move funds between Xahau, a specialized smart contract network, and the XRP Ledger using the network’s cross-chain teleport feature.
This flow between blockchains creates consistent DEX activity. Vet further stated that the auto-bridging function allows the decentralized exchange to aggregate liquidity and trading volume more effectively than fragmented smart contract DEX platforms. Traders always interact on the same unified platform, allowing the protocol to optimize order routing network-wide.
Mini dictionary: Xahau is an independent, smart contract-enabled blockchain network designed with interoperability for the XRP Ledger. The teleport feature enables assets to move seamlessly between Xahau and XRPL.
The protocol aggregates liquidity and trades in a way that enables smaller, less-traded assets to benefit from deeper liquidity and improved trading outcomes.
Liquidity providers, AMM routing, and future outlook
Vincent Van Code, a software engineer specializing in blockchain protocols, raised questions regarding routing through automated market makers (AMMs) and liquidity providers. Vet responded that an estimated 31% of auto-bridged volume on XRPL DEX passes through AMM or liquidity provider pools, though he cautioned that this figure was approximate and that detailed breakdowns require more comprehensive data.
Despite the vivid data from Vet’s 72-hour snapshot, current auto-bridging activity accounts for just 0.16% of total DEX trades in the given period. While the share remains low, Vet suggested that as usage of the protocol grows and auto-bridged volume rises to double digits, the feature will become a more prominent part of the XRP Ledger DEX. For now, the technical groundwork is in place and proving capable of handling high-volume and cross-asset trades efficiently.
