Developers working on XRP Ledger, a decentralized blockchain network supporting the XRP cryptocurrency, are testing a new transaction type aimed at enabling users to open blockchain wallets without the need to purchase XRP. This change could eliminate a significant barrier for those looking to access stablecoin payments or large-scale blockchain applications, particularly as Ripple pursues broader adoption through products like RLUSD and AI-powered payment services.
Proposal aims to lower entry barriers for wallet creation
Currently, every new account created on XRP Ledger must hold a minimum reserve of 1 XRP, acting as a safeguard against spam and unchecked network growth. This requirement imposes a considerable cost on enterprises wishing to onboard large user bases, such as businesses that must allocate 100,000 XRP to open 100,000 customer wallets.
The newly proposed transaction alters this structure by shifting the reserve burden onto a sponsoring account, often controlled by a business or platform provider. Instead of requiring end users to buy and reserve XRP, enterprises can sponsor accounts, thus allowing customers to receive stablecoins and use services without directly interacting with XRP.
The proposal does not remove the role of XRP within the network but reallocates the economic responsibility, enabling businesses to facilitate onboarding and stablecoin usage more efficiently.
This adjustment is designed to streamline the onboarding of users interested solely in dollar-backed stablecoins like RLUSD, removing a hurdle that would otherwise limit access and adoption for millions of potential consumers.
Integration and growing institutional partnerships
Ripple, the blockchain-based payments company behind XRP Ledger, recently joined forces with Privy, owned by Stripe, to deploy embedded wallets within XRPL applications. This partnership aims to simplify the experience for users transacting in XRP, RLUSD, and through automated processes powered by artificial intelligence.
Although the new sponsorship mechanism could play a vital role in Ripple’s AI payments strategy, its success relies on consensus among XRPL validators. Automated software agents are expected to drive much of the future payment volume, executing financial operations without continuous human oversight.
In related developments, RLUSD distribution has accelerated via institutional alliances. Investment platform Robinhood plans to soon offer RLUSD to its retail users, which could significantly expand the stablecoin’s footprint. Meanwhile, global financial institution BNY has extended digital asset custody to include both XRP and RLUSD.
Mini dictionary: RLUSD is a dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by Ripple, designed to facilitate on-chain payments and liquidity on the XRP Ledger by providing users with a digital representation of US dollars that can be moved across the blockchain.
Validator approval remains a hurdle
Activation of the proposed wallet sponsorship function is tied to the broader Sponsor amendment on the XRP Ledger. As of October 19, only 11 out of 35 validators had endorsed the amendment, far short of the 29 votes required to meet XRPL’s supermajority threshold. A later tally on October 28 recorded 10 supporting votes, indicating that support remains limited and subject to confirmation on the official dashboard.
Any amendment to XRPL’s core protocol must sustain over 80% validator approval for two consecutive weeks before implementation. Previous network upgrade delays have shown that dropping below this threshold resets the activation countdown and stalls progress.
| Date | Supporting Validators | Total Validators | Supermajority Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| October 19 | 11 | 35 | 29 |
| October 28 | 10 | 35 | 29 |
Achieving supermajority remains critical to advancing this proposal, which could have a significant impact on the future growth and accessibility of the XRP Ledger ecosystem.
Validators must maintain over 80% consensus for two weeks in order for any amendment, including the Sponsor transaction, to go live on the network.
