Zcash has initiated its NU7 network upgrade on the testnet, marking a significant step toward implementing several protocol changes ahead of the planned mainnet rollout next month.
Key technical changes in NU7
Block 4,465,026 was mined on the Zcash testnet on October 4 at 18:21:45 UTC, activating the NU7 protocol upgrade at the scheduled point. Zcash confirmed through its official X account that NU7 is now live for testnet use.
The primary aim of NU7 is to reduce the network’s target block spacing, decreasing it from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. Developers claim this adjustment could enhance transaction throughput and potentially improve overall network efficiency.
NU7 also introduces a Network Sustainability Mechanism, which reallocates a portion of transaction fees into future block rewards. This change is designed to support long-term network funding and incentivize ongoing protocol development.
An additional aspect of NU7 is the deactivation of version 4 transactions. This move will render ZEC stored in the legacy Sprout shielded pool unspendable unless users migrate their funds prior to mainnet activation.
Zcash’s new upgrade will leave legacy funds in the Sprout pool inaccessible unless those assets are moved before the update is finalized.
Testing phase and timeline for mainnet decision
The Zcash Foundation advised testnet operators to deploy the release candidate under real network conditions, emphasizing the importance of broad and thorough testing in preparation for mainnet integration.
The current testnet period allows developers and stakeholders to evaluate the stability and effectiveness of the proposed upgrades before moving forward. This process is expected to help identify any unforeseen issues before the mainnet launch.
Zcash developers are scheduled to review the testnet experience and make a final decision regarding mainnet activation on October 20. They will also set the official activation height at that time. If approved, mainnet activation of NU7 is currently targeted for November 5.
Supporting efficient market decisions
Monitoring critical protocol changes is especially important in fast-moving crypto markets, where factors such as a Federal Reserve policy shift or a new altcoin listing can significantly impact price action within seconds. To avoid inefficient portfolio management and missed opportunities caused by constantly switching between different apps for charts, news, and asset tracking, traders have begun using tools like CryptoAppsy. This service brings real-time price charts, customized alerts, coin-specific news, and macro market data together on one interface, without requiring registration or creating an account, offering a privacy-first solution as network upgrades progress.
