A series of notable exits from the Ethereum Foundation has drawn increasing attention in recent weeks. On Monday, the foundation confirmed the departure of Carl Beek and Julian Ma, signaling another chapter in the ongoing high-level reshuffling within the organization. These latest exits coincide with a period marked by other prominent names stepping away from the foundation in various leading capacities.

Key departures stir the community

News of Carl Beek and Julian Ma leaving the foundation quickly became a hot topic within the Ethereum community. Both held pivotal roles, making their resignations particularly impactful. Previously, Barnabé Monnot and Tim Beiko, who contributed to technical development and protocol coordination respectively, had either left or suspended their responsibilities. Additionally, researcher Trent Van Epps exited earlier this year to launch the independent Protocol Guild. Similarly, Alex Stokes recently announced a leave of absence in a public statement.

The string of executive departures fueled debates across social media, especially on X. Community members openly questioned, “Why are so many people leaving the Ethereum Foundation?” These ongoing discussions have sparked new uncertainties about the project’s future direction.

Foundation evolution and new directions

Established in 2014 and headquartered in Switzerland, the nonprofit Ethereum Foundation spearheads the development of the blockchain network. The foundation encompasses activities in research, network development, and public funding. Earlier this year, it introduced updated internal guidelines to clarify its role within the broader ecosystem.

The published document reiterated the foundation’s self-view, stating that it is neither the owner nor the central authority of Ethereum, but rather one of several entities supporting the network’s health. The foundation also reaffirmed its commitment to decentralization and open-source development principles. These moves underline an ambition to further reduce the foundation’s direct influence over the ecosystem.

As part of last year’s restructuring, Tomasz Stańczak was appointed co-executive director, but his tenure proved brief before his early departure. The spate of management changes has drawn renewed calls for greater transparency and clear administrative processes from the community.

Hsiao-Wei Wang also played a significant leadership role within the foundation’s management team for a period. With shifts in organizational structure, there is growing curiosity over how these changes will shape the foundation’s approach to critical projects and teams in the coming months.

Rising questions from the community

Outside of its internal guidelines, the Ethereum Foundation has yet to release any public statement specifically addressing the recent spate of departures. Observers throughout the sector are closely watching how these high-level personnel shifts may influence the broader Ethereum ecosystem.

The wave of exits highlighted by Carl Beek and Julian Ma’s departure has intensified questions within the community regarding the foundation’s leadership and its strategy for future projects.

With the rollout of the new internal guidelines, the foundation’s reallocation of responsibilities and changes to its organizational structure could shape the direction of upcoming Ethereum initiatives.
