Officials clarify crypto token origins

The “Sanae Token” quickly drew attention due to its direct use of the prime minister’s name. During a session in the lower house of the National Diet, Takaichi stated that she was not aware of the token’s existence prior to the news reports and firmly denied any links to it.

The situation intensified after reports revealed connections between the token and Tsuyoshi Kinoshita, Takaichi’s chief public secretary. The token reportedly originated from individuals affiliated with businessman Ken Matsui. Kinoshita acknowledged he communicated with operators tied to Matsui but said he believed “Sanae Token” referred to app points, not an actual cryptocurrency.

The controversy now centers on whether Kinoshita knowingly engaged with those behind the crypto project or if he misunderstood the nature of what was being discussed.

Regulation and government stance on crypto

Japan’s crypto sector has seen rapid developments in recent years, with officials taking both promotional and regulatory steps. Takaichi has expressed support for advancing blockchain and the broader Web3 sector, while maintaining a cautious stance by strengthening regulations targeting fraud and unauthorized token issuance.

Protecting investors has become an increasingly important policy issue. The government’s dual approach seeks to encourage legitimate crypto innovation while also narrowing legal loopholes and tightening the approval process for new token projects.

As part of wider financial reforms, Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama reported that Japan may approve cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds in the coming years, potentially launching the nation’s first Bitcoin ETF before 2028. This move would follow similar steps taken by the US and reflects Japan’s gradual but steady embrace of digital asset markets.

Market access and evolving platforms

As market participants monitor regulatory changes and the performance of new crypto tokens, technical innovation continues to impact how real-world and virtual assets interact. Platforms such as 1stepSwap are reshaping the investment landscape by making real-world assets, including shares of major US companies and commodities like gold and silver, accessible directly from digital wallets. This removes traditional barriers and intermediaries, and by finding the best price available at any moment, enables users to diversify their portfolios and trade major global stocks within seconds.

Takaichi clarified that she had no prior knowledge of “Sanae Token” and disassociated herself from the project, while her public secretary, Kinoshita, indicated a misunderstanding by stating he believed the reference was to app points, not an actual cryptocurrency.
