Matthew Sigel, Head of Digital Assets Research at asset manager VanEck, addressed growing concerns about the potential threat posed by quantum computing to Bitcoin‘s cryptography. During a conversation with CNBC, Sigel emphasized that while technological changes in the crypto sector can be gradual due to its decentralized structure, stakeholders are alert to the challenge and are proactively seeking solutions.

Quantum computing raises new security questions

Quantum computing, a technological field leveraging quantum mechanics for computational tasks, has become a focus of debate within the cryptocurrency sector. The core concern is that future advancements could theoretically enable quantum computers to disrupt traditional cryptographic protections securing Bitcoin transactions and wallets. At present, machines powerful enough to break Bitcoin’s cryptography do not exist, and those available are still prone to errors. Nevertheless, the mere prospect has driven the Bitcoin community and leading developers to consider precautionary measures.

Unlike traditional corporate structures where a CEO can direct changes, Bitcoin’s decentralized governance model means improvements require consensus and often take more time to implement.

Developers and major firms pursue quantum-resistant solutions

Bitcoin developers have already begun testing quantum-resistant signatures on live sidechains to prepare for potential threats. Sidechains allow developers to experiment with new security measures without risking the main Bitcoin network.

Major industry players, including Coinbase, America’s largest crypto exchange, and infrastructure specialist Blockstream, are also participating in efforts to address quantum risks. In July, Coinbase revealed plans for a “post-quantum signing pipeline” that would use secure hardware enclaves and threshold cryptography, aiming to safeguard digital assets even in a scenario where quantum computers become a significant threat.

A Bitcoin Security Consortium, which includes BlackRock, Fidelity Digital Assets, and payments firm Block, was established in July to advance open-source projects that provide quantum resilience. These companies contribute both funding and engineering talent to the initiative. Among these proposals is BIP-360, which seeks to introduce a new transaction output type that would help mitigate the long-term risks posed by quantum computing.

Community moves forward despite challenges

Although quantum computers capable of threatening Bitcoin remain theoretical, the coordinated response among developers, exchanges, and fintech companies shows that preparation has already begun. Experts maintain that while improvements may take time due to the absence of centralized leadership, the collective industry talent is focused on technical innovation, ensuring Bitcoin’s underlying security evolves alongside advances in quantum technology.

Bitcoin continues to function as the world’s largest computer network, and its resilience relies on ongoing vigilance and collaborative upgrades. Developers and corporate stakeholders alike are working to build quantum resistance into the protocol, seeking to secure Bitcoin’s future as quantum computing progresses.
