Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has indicated that the upcoming Hegotá upgrade, planned for 2027, may mark the network’s final “normal” fork before a shift toward more advanced cryptographic and consensus technologies. Buterin suggested that features of Hegotá would still be familiar to those acquainted with Ethereum in its early years, but future upgrades will move in a new direction.

Shift toward advanced technologies

Buterin identified technologies such as recursive STARKs, automated formal verification, optimized consensus mechanisms, and quantum-resistant cryptography as core components of Ethereum’s next phase. He described these developments as marking a significant evolution for the protocol.

PeerDAS, a technological advancement that enables nodes to sample data portions for verification instead of downloading entire datasets, was highlighted as an early step in this transition. Buterin argued that PeerDAS represents the network’s movement from a simple blockchain to a far more robust and multifunctional platform.

As development progresses, more computational activity in Ethereum applications could move offchain, while the base layer would focus on verifying results, settling transactions, and maintaining shared onchain state. This change, according to Buterin, is likely to reshape how new applications are constructed on the network.

Community debates offchain computation

The possibility of offloading computation has sparked debate within the Ethereum community. Researcher Barnabé Monnot stated that migrating computation offchain, while submitting proofs and data to the chain, could reduce network strain and support lighter nodes. However, he maintained that the role of Ethereum as a “world computer” requires keeping key records and direct dependencies onchain.

Monnot emphasized that maintaining essential data onchain allows users to verify interactions without intermediaries, preserving transparency and trust in decentralized applications. He warned that relying too heavily on offchain processes could erode some of the protocol’s foundational principles.

Monnot contended that “a world computer” should still keep important records directly onchain, letting users interact with applications and access data without external dependencies. He suggested that this approach balances efficiency with transparency and user autonomy.

In the evolving decentralized finance (DeFi) sector, pseudonymous commentator Cryptographic discussed how the new architecture could enable more sophisticated operations outside smart contracts. He suggested that complex processes like collateral analysis, liquidation routing, or matching borrowers and lenders might occur offchain, while the Ethereum base layer would verify rule compliance and process settlements.

Comparison with trust-based models

Not all observers are convinced demand for proof-based verification will overtake traditional trust-based systems. Crypto lawyer Gabriel Shapiro questioned the extent to which cryptographic proofs are required compared with trust models that rely on legal frameworks, regulation, or reputation. He argued that many mainstream financial services operate on trust and oversight, rather than continuous cryptographic confirmation.

Buterin’s comments prompted broader discussion regarding the optimal balance between offchain computation and onchain verification, as Ethereum’s technical direction increasingly diverges from its original model.

Technical shifts of this magnitude can be seen in other fast-evolving crypto sectors as well. In the meme token market, an internet trend can transform into millions of dollars of interest within days. According to data shared by Fomo App, a trade involving “Niu Lai”—which turned an initial $99 investment into approximately $370,000, stands out as a striking example of this activity. In this market, tracking not only prices but also the timing and token choices of investors is crucial. Fomo App brings token discovery and trading together on a single platform, featuring social feeds, investor rankings, and trade notifications. Buterin believes Hegotá will be Ethereum’s last upgrade that would look familiar to those present in 2015, anticipating a shift to technologies such as recursive STARKs, formal verification, and quantum-safe cryptography in future development cycles.
