Seven leading British banks, including Barclays, HSBC UK, Lloyds Banking Group, Monzo, Nationwide, NatWest, and Santander, have completed live customer transactions using tokenized sterling deposits. The initiative, part of the Great British Tokenised Deposit project coordinated by UK Finance, demonstrates the potential for banks to introduce programmable functions to conventional money without creating a separate stablecoin.

Banks test programmable deposits

The banks, major players in the United Kingdom’s financial sector, collaborated on the pilot to explore the advantages of making ordinary bank deposits both tokenized and programmable. Quant, a London-based blockchain technology company, developed the shared platform that enabled these transactions.

Initial test cases included two remortgage completions and a payment within a consumer marketplace. In these examples, funds were automatically locked and subsequently released once predetermined conditions were fulfilled, showcasing the capacity for programmable payments within the traditional banking system.

Funds in tokenized deposits could be “locked and released automatically” once all agreed conditions were satisfied, demonstrating the ability to introduce conditional payments to standard deposits without relying on stablecoins.

This capability raises important questions about the future necessity of stablecoins, especially as traditional banks experiment with similar programmable features for ordinary deposits.

Stablecoin versus tokenized deposit: key differences

While tokenized deposits and stablecoins can share technical similarities, they differ fundamentally in terms of legal treatment and risk. Tokenized deposits remain a claim on a conventional commercial bank, whereas stablecoins generally represent a claim on a separate issuer backed by reserve assets. This legal distinction is now central to the ongoing debate around the role of stablecoins and tokenized bank money.

By enabling faster settlements and programmable payments, banks can retain customer deposits within the existing financial framework. However, stablecoins continue to be more portable across public blockchain networks and between users of different banks, contributing to the growth of stablecoin payments in trading, cross-border payments, and treasury operations.

Tokenized deposits, on the other hand, rely on interoperability and shared infrastructure among participating banks. The UK pilot’s significance lies in the ability of seven prominent, and often competing, institutions to collaborate on such infrastructure.

Next steps for tokenized sterling deposits

UK Finance reported that future pilots will focus on integrating tokenized fiat money with digital assets and testing the settlement of digital debt instruments using tokenized deposits. These pilots aim to address a crucial challenge in the digital asset space: the need for digital forms of cash to settle transactions in tokenized assets.

By advancing these technologies, the participating banks seek to modernize settlement infrastructure while maintaining the principles and security of the traditional banking system.
