Bitcoin starts October with bullish momentum after 9% September gain

In Brief

  • 🚀 Bitcoin kicked off October with a 9% September gain and renewed bullish momentum.

  • 📈 Bitcoin rallied above $87,000 after ETF inflows surged and altcoins joined the uptrend.

“Uptober” remains a familiar phrase among cryptocurrency traders, reflecting the trend of strong Bitcoin performance in October. However, 2025 brought a notable exception to this seasonal pattern. Bitcoin began October 2025 at approximately $119,000 and continued its upward trajectory early in the month, surpassing its previous all-time high by more than $7,000 to reach just above $126,000.

ETF flows and macro shock

The initial strength was fueled by robust demand for exchange-traded funds, with US-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs attracting about $4.7 billion during the first half of the month. These inflows supported market sentiment and contributed to Bitcoin’s record-setting performance in early October.

Yet, this positive momentum proved vulnerable to external shocks. A new trade dispute between the United States and China triggered a sharp risk-off shift across financial markets. This event led to the largest cryptocurrency liquidation on record at the time, reversing gains and impacting Bitcoin’s price dynamics.

After seven consecutive years of October gains, Bitcoin declined toward $105,000, ultimately closing the month down by about 4%. Altcoins suffered steeper losses, with Ethereum dropping nearly 7%.

Seasonal strength supported early gains, but a significant macro shock sent Bitcoin and altcoins sharply lower as October 2025 progressed.

Historical perspective

Despite the setback, October has generally been a favorable month for Bitcoin. Reviewing the period from 2013 to 2025, Bitcoin finished higher in ten out of thirteen Octobers. The average gain for these positive months stood at roughly 19%, highlighting the month’s reputation for robust rallies.

This historical trend offers context but does not guarantee future outcomes, especially in the presence of unexpected macroeconomic disruptions.

October 2026 outlook

As October 2026 begins, the market mood has shifted considerably. Bitcoin posted a 9% increase in September, reaching an eight-month high above $87,000 after jumping 25% in August. Exchange-traded fund inflows have picked up again, and improvements in liquidity, combined with short covering, have further strengthened the current uptrend.

Several altcoins, including Solana, XRP, NEAR, LINK, and Zcash, recorded large gains in September. Ethereum also broke higher following its August rally, contributing to a broader sense of momentum in the crypto sector.

This environment sets the stage for both opportunity and risk. The market heads into October with considerable optimism, much of which may already be reflected in current prices. Sustained positive ETF inflows and stable macroeconomic conditions could support further gains, but an abrupt move higher may expose traders to the risk of heightened liquidations if leverage rises too quickly.

MonthBitcoin PerformanceKey Factors
October 2025-4%US-China trade dispute, ETF inflows, major liquidation
September 2026+9%ETF inflows, short covering, improved liquidity
August 2026+25%Altcoin rallies, bullish sentiment

Ultimately, the experience of 2025 suggests seasonality may reinforce existing trends but cannot override major external shocks. October 2026 is off to a strong start, but the duration and sustainability of this positive momentum will be critical.
