Grayscale, recognized as the largest digital asset investment platform by assets under management as of September 2026, has introduced a feature named in-kind transfers. This new service allows eligible investors to directly exchange digital assets they already hold for shares in 10 different Grayscale exchange-traded products (ETPs), without the need to liquidate their cryptocurrencies for cash beforehand.
In-kind transfers bring operational efficiencies
The in-kind transfer process is designed to streamline how clients allocate their existing cryptocurrency holdings into traditional investment vehicles. Grayscale stated that investors may benefit by reducing the administrative workload involved with self-custody, saving on trading fees, and more easily integrating digital assets into broader portfolio management strategies.
Data indicates that the usage of in-kind transactions has increased significantly in the United States Bitcoin ETP market. The proportion of Bitcoin ETP activity conducted through these direct transfers grew from 28% in March to 62% in June, reflecting growing adoption of the approach among large-scale crypto investors.
Grayscale described in-kind investing as a way to contribute eligible digital assets directly in exchange for shares of a Grayscale product. The firm highlighted reduced self-custody requirements, potentially lower execution costs, and more streamlined portfolio management as key benefits for investors.
Mini dictionary: In-kind transfer, an investment process where assets (such as cryptocurrencies) are contributed directly to an investment fund in their original form, rather than converting them to cash first. This method is commonly used in traditional finance to minimize tax liabilities and transaction costs.
Ten Grayscale ETPs now support in-kind transfers
The 10 eligible Grayscale ETPs for in-kind transfer include funds linked to a variety of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, Dogecoin, Avalanche, Chainlink, Hyperliquid, Sui, and Zcash. Investors may now convert their existing coins in these assets directly into corresponding fund shares.
According to recent figures, the Grayscale Solana Staking ETF (GSOL) accepts in-kind contributions starting at approximately $80,300, making it the entry-level among Grayscale’s eligible ETPs. In contrast, the Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF (BTC) has the highest minimum estimated at about $364,800. These minimums are subject to change as crypto prices fluctuate.
| Grayscale ETP | Approximate Minimum Investment |
|---|---|
| Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF (BTC) | $364,800 |
| Solana Staking ETF (GSOL) | $80,300 |
Additional eligible products include the Ethereum Staking Mini ETF (ETH), Dogecoin Trust ETF (GDOG), Chainlink Trust ETF (GLNK), Zcash ETF (ZCSH), Avalanche Staking ETF (GAVA), Hyperliquid Staking ETF (HYPG), Sui Staking ETF (GSUI), and XRP Trust ETF (GXRP).
In-kind investment is now available for 10 Grayscale products, including prominent funds linked to assets such as Solana, Bitcoin, Chainlink, and XRP, opening up new options for digital asset portfolio management.
Grayscale’s move reflects broader momentum in the adoption of direct asset transfers within the crypto ETP sector, as investors increasingly seek efficient, cost-effective ways to allocate digital assets into managed investment vehicles.
