The Algorand Foundation has unveiled an ambitious roadmap aiming to make its blockchain network broadly quantum resistant by the end of 2027. This announcement comes as preparations across the crypto sphere intensify, amid concerns that quantum computers could eventually threaten the cryptographic systems safeguarding digital assets.
Transition to Begin in 2026
According to the roadmap, the initial shift is scheduled for 2026. At this stage, Algorand plans to roll out quantum post accounts, enable multi-signature wallets, and activate staking support with quantum-resistant protocols. Subsequent phases will extend these protections deeper into the protocol’s core infrastructure.
“Migrating a live protocol takes years, and as we approach the end of this decade, the chances of quantum attacks on old encryption methods will substantially increase,” Chris Peikert, Algorand Foundation’s Chief Scientist, stated.
Peikert emphasized that this is not a process that can be completed overnight. The Foundation highlighted that this strategy builds on work initiated in 2022, underscoring their aim to achieve comprehensive quantum resistance across the entire network by late 2027.
Industry-Wide Quantum Readiness Accelerates
Today, most major blockchains rely on elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) to secure wallets and transactions. Experts warn, however, that ECC may become vulnerable to sufficiently advanced quantum computers. Although such machines do not yet exist, institutions, tech companies, and crypto projects are steadily drafting long-term transition plans to prepare.

Google has advised organizations to begin preparing their security infrastructure for post-quantum cryptography and revealed that it has already integrated quantum-safe standards into parts of its systems, targeting completion by 2029. Simultaneously, NIST is leading the charge on standardizing post-quantum algorithms and preparing a timeline to retire outdated encryption systems.
Ethereum and Solana Embrace Quantum Preparedness
Quantum readiness is becoming a strategic focus in the crypto ecosystem. The Ethereum Foundation this year launched a dedicated post-quantum security initiative to explore transition paths for wallets, apps, and validators. Meanwhile, Solana developers released proposals outlining how users and the network could switch to quantum-resistant cryptography should the threat become imminent.
The Algorand Foundation has stressed the importance of beginning quantum preparations before the so called Q Day – a hypothetical event when a quantum computer could break the encryption that currently secures digital assets.
The Foundation underlined that migrating live blockchain infrastructure to post-quantum cryptography demands major changes not only to user wallets, but to core protocol elements as well, justifying the need for years of advance preparation.
Algorand expects to beat NIST’s schedule for phasing out certain legacy cryptography standards, aiming to reach full quantum resistance ahead of the U.S. National Security Agency’s own timeline for securing national security systems.
