Prominent cryptocurrency analyst Kamilah Stevenson has indicated that a shift in the Bank of Japan’s (BOJ) approach to describing inflation could have wide-reaching effects on both the Japanese yen and global crypto markets, potentially triggering volatility even in the absence of an immediate interest rate hike.

Focus on inflation target signals

Stevenson highlighted the importance of BOJ policymakers explicitly stating that core inflation has reached their longstanding 2% goal. She noted that the central bank has not made such a declaration since it first set that objective in 2013. According to Stevenson, such a statement could be interpreted by investors as signaling tighter policy ahead, prompting a reassessment of risk across major markets.

A Bloomberg survey cited by Stevenson showed that economists do not anticipate an interest rate increase from the BOJ in the immediate term. However, she emphasized that changes in the BOJ’s language regarding inflation could serve as an unexpected catalyst, overshadowing the impact of any stable policy rate.

The current market expectation is that BOJ wording, not necessarily a rate change, may catch investors off guard and act as a trigger for global asset repricing.

Yen carry trade and market consequences

A key mechanism noted by Stevenson is the yen carry trade. This strategy involves borrowing yen at Japan’s persistently low rates to invest in higher-yield assets elsewhere. If Japan’s borrowing costs rise or if the yen appreciates suddenly, such positions can be squeezed, forcing rapid liquidation of other assets—including cryptocurrencies.

Stevenson referenced August 5, 2024, when Japanese equities dropped by over 12% and cryptocurrency markets experienced notable declines. That episode followed a BOJ policy rate hike to about 0.25%. Stevenson linked this selloff to unwinding of carry trades, suggesting that forced liquidations ripple through broader markets as funding becomes more expensive and the yen strengthens relative to the US dollar.

Mini dictionary: Yen carry trade – an investment strategy where market players borrow money cheaply in Japanese yen, convert those funds into other currencies, and invest in assets with higher expected returns. This can magnify market reactions when Japanese interest rates shift.

Potential impact on XRP and cross-border flows

Discussing $XRP, Stevenson separated near-term market turbulence from long-term fundamentals. She explained that a sudden surge in the yen’s value could trigger broad-based selling in digital assets, including $XRP, irrespective of project-specific factors.

For the longer term, Stevenson pointed to the existing partnership between SBI Holdings, a major Japanese financial services group, and XRP. She mentioned that SBI Remit utilizes XRP for payment transfers, while SBI’s lending solutions also involve the digital asset. Stevenson suggested that increased blockchain-based transfers between Japan and the United States could boost demand for cross-currency settlement using XRP in the future.

Mini dictionary: SBI Holdings – a major Japanese financial services firm with significant involvement in blockchain and crypto payments, including a longstanding relationship with Ripple and use of XRP in remittance and payment services.

However, Stevenson emphasized that while this scenario represents a possible long-term use case, there is no direct evidence that Japanese rate changes alone drive XRP demand. She noted that stablecoins might also fulfill much of the cross-border payments demand, independent of XRP usage.

Stevenson clarified that while the partnership between SBI and XRP represents future potential, a direct, automatic link between BOJ interest rate moves and immediate XRP demand has not been established, and increased stablecoin use could serve similar roles for international payments.

Japan’s Treasury holdings and global implications

Another potential transmission channel is Japan’s substantial holdings of US Treasuries, which total over $1 trillion. Stevenson observed that if Japanese yields become more attractive, domestic investors could repatriate capital, potentially selling off US government bonds. This, in turn, could push US yields higher, though she cautioned that such changes are not inevitable and would depend on a variety of factors.

Broader market participants will be closely monitoring the BOJ’s statements, as policy language and rate changes in Japan can have far-reaching impacts on yield-sensitive strategies, risk appetite, and digital asset flows worldwide.
