Bitcoin recovered sharply this week, erasing recent losses as it climbed from the low $75,000 range to above $80,000 in a volatile trading stretch impacted by both regulatory and macroeconomic factors.

Fed interest rate hike and regulatory developments

The backdrop for Bitcoin’s price action included the Federal Reserve’s first interest rate hike since July 2023. The central bank increased its benchmark rate by 25 basis points, setting the new target range at 3.75% to 4%. In projections released with the decision, the Fed indicated that interest rates could remain higher for longer, hinting at another possible increase in 2026.

Meanwhile, the US Senate failed to advance the Clarity Act, which had aimed to introduce a more comprehensive federal framework for digital assets. The procedural vote did not reach the 60-vote threshold required, leaving the bill stalled and creating further uncertainty regarding the timeline for broad crypto regulation in the United States.

Despite market expectations for the Fed’s move, the prospect of prolonged restrictive monetary policy increased caution among investors, typically making speculative assets such as cryptocurrencies less attractive in the short term.

The regulatory setback was seen as having broader implications for the digital asset sector, although its direct impact on Bitcoin was limited due to its relatively more established legal status in the US.

Market participants noted that while the Senate vote added uncertainty, Bitcoin remained under an existing regulatory framework, so its short-term risk was lower compared to other cryptocurrencies directly awaiting clarifications from new legislation.

Price volatility and capital flows

Bitcoin started September trading between $80,000 and $81,000 but struggled to maintain upward momentum throughout the first half of the month. The price weakened sharply around September 10, falling to approximately $76,500 and remaining within the $76,000 to $79,000 band for several days.

A short-lived recovery on September 14 briefly pushed BTC to about $78,200 before sellers returned, pressuring the asset further. The sell-off accelerated following the Senate’s procedural vote on September 15, pushing Bitcoin below $76,000 and deepening uncertainty for traders and investors.

By September 16, Bitcoin touched near $75,000, with capital flows weakening across the crypto market. Analytics firm Glassnode observed that Bitcoin ETFs experienced outflows and both new capital and stablecoin growth slowed during this period.

ETF inflows and outflows have emerged as key drivers in Bitcoin’s price dynamics. Spot Bitcoin ETFs in the US, introduced in early 2024, allow institution-level and traditional investors direct access to the crypto asset via regulated channels.

Mini dictionary: Spot Bitcoin ETF, a type of investment fund that holds Bitcoin directly and is traded on traditional exchanges, offering investors exposure to Bitcoin without needing to buy or store the cryptocurrency themselves.

ETF inflows fuel sudden rebound

After stabilizing near $76,000 over September 16 and 17, Bitcoin surged more than 5% on September 18. Prices briefly exceeded $80,000, reaching around $80,700 to $80,900. This rebound was closely tied to renewed ETF inflows: US-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs posted approximately $160 million in net inflows that day, reversing two days of prior outflows.

Sept. 16$75,000Negative
Sept. 18$80,700–$80,900+$160 million

Institutional interest through ETF products has become a major variable influencing spot market trends for Bitcoin. While daily ETF flows can fluctuate, consistent inflows may help support higher prices by increasing aggregate demand.

Bitcoin recovered from its weekly lows, fueled by a sharp increase in ETF inflows and renewed institutional demand, even as broader market risks and uncertainty around US crypto regulation persisted.

Uncertainty remains for digital assets

Despite the rebound, underlying risks have yet to be resolved. The prospect of elevated interest rates from the Federal Reserve and the stalled progress of the Clarity Act maintain a high level of uncertainty for the digital asset industry.

At the same time, ongoing regulatory activity from agencies such as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) ensures that oversight of the space remains active, regardless of congressional delays.

Market participants continue to focus on ETF flows, monetary policy, and global risk appetite as the main variables likely to influence Bitcoin in the near term. The rapid move from below $75,000 to above $80,000 illustrates Bitcoin’s elevated volatility, with its next direction likely to depend on how these competing forces play out.
