Ilya Lichtenstein, a resident of New York, confessed to money laundering conspiracy charges during a court hearing at the US District Court in Washington. He also admitted to being the hacker behind the multimillion-dollar exploitation at the Bitfinex cryptocurrency exchange in 2016. The identity of the hacker had remained a mystery until now.
Moments ago, CNBC reported that Lichtenstein confessed to being the hacker. According to US authorities, the 35-year-old Lichtenstein and his wife, Heather “Razzlekhan” Morgan, planned to launder 119,754 Bitcoins worth approximately $71 million at the time of the exchange hack in 2016.
The Bitfinex hack, which is one of the most significant events in crypto history, serves as proof that criminals cannot escape justice even after years have passed. US officials repeatedly state that cryptocurrency hackers will eventually face the consequences of their actions.
