Concerns are rising within the Ethereum $1,902 community about the network’s potential loss of competitiveness and fundamental design issues. Observations indicate that the current structure is fragmented, which also points to communication and security challenges arising with the increase of layer-2 solutions.
Based Rollup Technology
In traditional layer-2 solutions, transactions are sent to the Ethereum mainnet through centralized sequencers. However, the newly proposed based rollup structure shifts transaction execution back to the main layer. This approach aims to achieve faster inter-network data and asset transfer.
The plan introduced by Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin in 2022 seeks to overcome the high fees and low speeds associated with layer-2 solutions. As different rollup systems strive to maintain a distributed structure, there is a growing necessity for enhanced inter-network compatibility.
Technical Challenges and Measures Taken
In classic rollups, centralized sequencers create a single point of failure, while based rollups utilize Ethereum’s built-in sequencing system. A significant technical challenge is ensuring transaction data conforms to the 12-second block time. Solutions for compatibility issues with alternative proof systems are anticipated.
Regarding this approach, Ben Fisch, CEO of Espresso Systems, stated: “Sharing the same sequencer essentially allows for rapid message transmission. However, differing behaviors may occasionally arise due to the economic incentives of the sequencers.”
Currently, only the Taiko-based rollup has been launched, while technical obstacles are expected to be resolved before widespread implementation of the technology. Developers are working to address these challenges through economic incentives and technical improvements.
In summary, the fragmentation of Ethereum’s sub-layer structures, data transfer issues, and risks posed by centralized sequencers necessitate new approaches for development. Innovative technologies appear to have the potential to enhance network compatibility in the long run.
