The Ethereum Foundation has announced that several major milestones have been reached in preparation for the network’s next substantial upgrade, named Glamsterdam. At the same time, the Foundation revealed new leadership for its Protocol team, introducing Will Corcoran, Kev Wedderburn, and Fredrik as the incoming heads.

Clear target set for glamsterdam

In a blog post published on Monday, the Ethereum Foundation outlined its goal to establish a 200 million gas limit as the baseline following the Glamsterdam upgrade. This represents a significant increase from the network’s current gas limit, which stands at approximately 60 million.

The Ethereum Foundation is one of the core organizations driving protocol development, research, client coordination, and the network’s long-term roadmap. The Foundation’s efforts focus on scaling, security, and preserving Ethereum’s decentralized nature by coordinating technical teams and developers.

In its latest statement, the Ethereum Foundation emphasized that implementing the Glamsterdam upgrade remains the top short-term priority for the team.

Glamsterdam was originally expected to launch in June. However, recent updates suggest the upgrade is now more likely to be deployed in the third quarter of 2026.

Major changes in block production and data storage

At its core, the Glamsterdam upgrade seeks to enhance the scalability of Ethereum’s main layer. The planned changes will redesign how transactions are processed and how the growing data set is managed. This will fundamentally alter the way blocks are produced and validated on the network.

Additionally, the Foundation confirmed that the enshrined Proposer Builder Separation (ePBS) mechanism has reached a stable state. Known as ePBS, this system allows validators to delegate block creation tasks to specialized builder structures, with the separation being formally encoded into Ethereum’s consensus rules.

Another key element, EIP 8037, has been finalized. This proposal introduces more intelligent pricing for data storage, aiming to prevent uncontrolled growth of the network’s state as block gas limits increase.

New leadership for the protocol team

Leadership transition has begun within the Ethereum Foundation’s Protocol division. Will Corcoran, Kev Wedderburn, and Fredrik have been named as new leaders, while experienced developers Barnabe Monnot and Tim Beiko will depart from the Foundation. Alex Stokes is also set to go on leave.

Sharing an update on X (formerly Twitter), Corcoran noted that a new era is starting for the Protocol group. He confirmed that ongoing work will continue on Glamsterdam as well as upcoming initiatives Hegota and Strawmap. Notably, Strawmap is described as a key part of Ethereum’s long-term technical strategy, especially regarding preparedness for potential quantum threats.
