Judge rejects new trial request

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Mildred Escobedo delivered the sentence on August 4, denying Halem’s attempt to secure a new trial. Halem’s defense attorneys argued that his prior legal team was ineffective, failing to call witnesses or sufficiently review evidence crucial to the case.

Judge Escobedo responded that the previous attorneys exceeded the minimum required standard and stated that the prosecution presented overwhelming evidence against Halem. She described the crime as driven by “sheer and utter greed” before ordering concurrent life sentences for both kidnapping and robbery charges.

Judge Escobedo said, “The evidence against Mr. Halem was overwhelming, and his crime was marked by sheer and utter greed.”

According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Halem will serve most of the extra 15-year term before the life sentence begins. He could become eligible for parole after seven years, though the review process will be determined by state parole guidelines.

Details of the Bitcoin theft

A jury found Halem, 38, guilty in March after a two-week trial. Prosecutors explained that Halem, along with three associates, pretended to be law enforcement officers serving a search warrant when they entered an 18th-floor Koreatown apartment in December 2024. The group arrived in vehicles tied to Halem’s luxury car rental business, wore police-marked vests, and accessed the building using a code supplied by a conspirator. During the incident, they handcuffed the 17-year-old victim and his girlfriend—using LAPD-issued restraints—and threatened to shoot the teen if he did not surrender the hard drive containing the Bitcoin.

Testimony at trial indicated that Halem monitored police radio traffic after the incident and discussed the apprehension of his alleged accomplices in private messages. The jury reached its verdict in less than a day, convicting Halem on all major charges.

Halem, who had served the LAPD for 13 years, ended his full-time position in 2022 but remained a reserve officer at the time of the crime.

Mini dictionary: Reserve officer, a part-time or volunteer law enforcement officer who supports the regular police force, often with limited hours and specific assignments.

Ongoing legal issues

Halem continues to face additional legal trouble. He is charged in a separate insurance fraud case involving an allegedly staged Bentley accident, as well as another crypto-linked home invasion prosecutors allege took place only days before the robbery for which he was convicted. In the second home invasion, prosecutors allege two victims were handcuffed while cryptocurrency, cash, and jewelry were taken.

All remaining charges remain allegations, and Halem is presumed innocent until proven otherwise. The co-defendants in the Koreatown robbery have not faced trial yet and likewise maintain their innocence.
