Edward Zimbardi, 59, faces federal charges in the United States for allegedly orchestrating a cryptocurrency Ponzi scheme worth $165 million. Zimbardi was extradited from Fiji to Georgia on August 14, 2026, following an investigation by US authorities.

Details of the alleged Ponzi scheme

Federal prosecutors claim Zimbardi promoted and managed The Crypto Program from June 2022 to August 2023, promising investors a fixed 25% monthly return on advertising packages. Instead, prosecutors allege that investor funds were redirected to cryptocurrency wallets controlled by Zimbardi. Over this period, thousands of people put in more than $165 million.

Prosecutors stated that the funds did not support advertising as advertised. Zimbardi allegedly lost over $34 million on speculative foreign-currency trades and used money from new participants to pay returns to earlier investors. Authorities say at least $10 million was used for personal spending, including his son’s home and luxury goods. The operation unraveled in August 2023, leaving investors with no possibility of recovering their money.

Prosecutors allege that despite promising 25% monthly returns, Zimbardi funneled investor funds into personal accounts, speculative trading, and luxury expenses, leaving thousands of investors at a loss when the scheme collapsed.

The Department of Financial Protection and Innovation in California issued a cease-and-desist order against The Crypto Program and Zimbardi on June 28, 2023, citing violations of securities laws and the omission of important information. Regulators highlighted the persistent challenge in the crypto sector: while they can issue public warnings, many investors are only alerted after substantial losses occur.

Extradition from Fiji and legal proceedings

According to prosecutors, Zimbardi left for Fiji in July 2025 after learning the FBI was probing his activities. He reportedly decided not to attend his son’s wedding in Virginia in May 2026, anticipating a possible arrest by US authorities.

US Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg stated that Zimbardi attempted to evade prosecution by fleeing to the South Pacific. Fijian authorities, working with the FBI and the State Department, returned Zimbardi to the United States. A federal grand jury indicted him on July 8 for 12 counts of wire fraud, 12 counts of money laundering, and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Zimbardi is presumed innocent while his case proceeds in court.

Crypto fraud trends and global impact

The FBI’s 2025 Internet Crime Report released in April 2026 revealed that losses from cyber-enabled crime reached nearly $21 billion. Cryptocurrency-related crimes accounted for $11 billion of that total, with Georgia ranking among the ten hardest-hit US states, recording over $264.5 million in losses due to such scams.

Chainalysis, a blockchain analytics firm, stated that the typical payment to scam addresses in 2025 surged by 253% to $2,764. Additionally, impersonation scams saw inflows increase by over 1,400% in the same period.

Data from TRM Labs indicated that illegal crypto transactions reached $158 billion in 2025, up almost 145% from the previous year, although illicit activity accounts for just 1.2% of total crypto transaction volume.

INTERPOL’s Global Financial Fraud Threat Assessment published in March 2026 observed that scam syndicates are growing internationally as they exchange resources, technology, and money laundering tactics. Fraud-related INTERPOL Notices and Diffusions have increased by 54% since 2024.

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) echoed these concerns in July, noting that criminal groups exploit inconsistent regulation and enforcement across countries to move billions in illegal crypto funds. While 83% of surveyed jurisdictions have adopted the FATF Travel Rule, many face difficulties in effective enforcement.

The Zimbardi case highlights how easily suspected fraud can cross borders, with both suspects and assets moving between jurisdictions. Experts emphasize that effective international cooperation remains crucial for tracing and intercepting illicit cryptocurrency flows.
