HSBC Group CEO Georges Elhedery announced that the bank’s new Hong Kong dollar-backed stablecoin, RedCoin (RCHKD), has been adopted by over 50,000 users just over a week after its public rollout. The milestone was revealed during the opening day of Hong Kong FinTech Week on November 2, 2026. RedCoin became available for public use on October 23.

Rapid adoption through PayMe integration

RedCoin can currently be accessed by more than 3.3 million users through HSBC’s PayMe mobile application. The digital asset is fully backed with segregated liquid fiat reserves on a one-to-one basis with the Hong Kong dollar, according to HSBC. Customers are able to utilize RedCoin for payments at merchants participating in the bank’s network and can add funds to their wallets through the app itself.

HSBC, a global banking and financial services institution headquartered in London, leveraged its broad existing customer base to advance RedCoin’s adoption. Thanks to its integration with PayMe, users did not need to download a separate application or create a new account in order to access the stablecoin.

Commentators on social media highlighted how integrating RedCoin into an established payment app significantly quickened its uptake. One user on X, with the handle @Pleb, observed that onboarding 50,000 users from a pool of 3.3 million existing PayMe customers was a streamlined process. Pleb added that obtaining a regulatory license presented a much greater challenge for HSBC.

Distribution was no longer a significant barrier for a stablecoin backed by a major financial group and integrated within an established payments platform, given the scale of HSBC’s customer ecosystem.

Licensed stablecoins under Hong Kong’s new regime

The introduction of RedCoin represents a significant development for Hong Kong’s digital asset landscape. RedCoin is one of only two stablecoins that have received a license under the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s (HKMA) recently implemented regulatory framework for digital assets. The other licensed stablecoin is Anchorpoint, issued by Standard Chartered.

Both stablecoins target the rapidly evolving digital payment sector in Hong Kong, providing regulated, bank-issued options for electronic settlement and value storage.

Network reach and real-world usage

RedCoin’s integration with PayMe enables its immediate use at more than 100,000 merchants across Hong Kong, providing practical payment solutions from the start. This contrasts with the often slow ecosystem development of many decentralized cryptocurrency projects, which can take years to achieve wide merchant acceptance.

Observers noted that RedCoin’s early momentum signals increasing competition among traditional banks to establish their presence in the digital payment industry.

Institutional infrastructure and technology

Unlike cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin or Ethereum, RedCoin is built on a private, permissioned blockchain using Hyperledger Besu technology. Access to the blockchain is controlled exclusively by HSBC, which determines how users and partners interact with the network. This arrangement ensures regulatory compliance and the security standards expected by banking authorities, but also carries certain limitations for end users.

Mini dictionary: Hyperledger Besu is an open-source Ethereum client designed for enterprise use, supporting both public and private blockchain networks. It provides permissioned controls that allow institutions like HSBC to restrict network access and maintain compliance with regulatory requirements.

Due to RedCoin’s operation on a closed network, customers cannot transfer tokens to external digital wallets or interact with decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols. Its functions remain limited to services and transactions supported within HSBC’s infrastructure.

HSBC, through its planned Global AI and Emerging Technology Institute, continues to explore areas such as blockchain and post-quantum cryptography, indicating ongoing investment in digital transformation and secure payments technology.
